No. 1 UCLA Storms Back for Season-Opening Win Over UC San Diego
February 13, 2026 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 1-ranked UCLA baseball stormed back from a three-run deficit to earn a season-opening win over UC San Diego on Friday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
ย
The Bruins (1-0) opened their season in strong fashion, improving to 16-6 on Opening Day under head coach John Savage (since 2005). After falling behind 3-0, UCLA responded with eight unanswered runs across the third and fourth innings to seize control of the game.
ย
All nine starters reached base in the victory, and eight of the nine drew at least one walk.
ย
Payton Brennan led the offensive surge, driving in four runs and scoring once during a 2-for-4 performance. Roman Martin added two RBIs while going 1-for-3, and leadoff hitter Dean West reached base twice, scored twice, and contributed a base hit.
ย
Roch Cholowsky, Cashel Dugger, and Dominic Cadiz each recorded a hit, while freshmen Aiden Aguayo and Cadiz made their collegiate debuts alongside transfer outfielder Will Gasparino.
ย
On the mound, Logan Reddemann earned the win in his UCLA debut, allowing three earned runs over five innings with six strikeouts and five hits surrendered.
ย
UC San Diego (0-1) struck first, using a pair of two-out hits in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead before adding another run in the third. UCLA answered immediately in the bottom half: West opened the frame with a walk, Cholowsky reached on an error, and consecutive walks to Levu and Martin brought in the Bruins' first run. Brennan followed with a sharp single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3, ending the night for Tritons starter Steele Murdock.
ย
UCLA broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning, highlighted by four hits, including a two-run double from Brennan to push the lead to 8-3.
ย
Redshirt senior May took over in the sixth and delivered 2.2 strong innings, allowing just one run while striking out four. Jake Swenson helped navigate out of an eighth-inning jam, and Easton Hawk closed the door with a perfect ninth to secure the series-opening win.
ย
The Bruins return to Jackie Robinson Stadium tomorrow afternoon to continue their series against UC San Diego. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT, with live coverage available on B1G+.
