Bruins Sweep on Day One of Battle for LA

LOS ANGELES – No. 2 UCLA went undefeated on Day One of the Battle for LA at Mapes Beach. The Bruins beat Boise State, 4-1, in the day's first match and defeated No. 3 Cal Poly, 4-1, in the final match.

The Bruins began the day with a quick 4-1 win over the Broncos. Ava Williamson and Jesse Dueck paired up for the first time on court 4 and took the first point with a 21-13, 21-16 win over Charlee Ellena/Keira Demirjian. Boise State tied it up on court 2 with a 21-14, 21-19 win by Addison Wolden/Ava Anderson over Cassie Dodd and Alexa Fernandez. But it was all UCLA after that, as the Bruins earned sweeps on the remaining courts. Mallory LaBreche and Adelina Okazaki defeated Elli Wolthuis/Lily Patock on court 5, 21-14, 21-11, and Harper Cooper and Enlsey Alden clinched the team victory with a 21-14, 21-10 win over Avery Allen/Addison Moss on court 3. Sally Perez and Maggie Boyd finished the match with a 21-12, 21-14 win on court 1 over Serena van der Made/Allyson Alden.

After Cal Poly defeated Boise State, 5-0, in the second match, the Mustangs took on the Bruins in the final match of the day. Cal Poly took the early lead on court 2 with a 21-16, 22-20 win by Izzy Martinez and Logan Walter over Dodd and Fernandez. Forcing their opponents into a three-set match, Williamson and Dueck found themselves victorious after winning the third set 15-12, tying the match at 1-1. UCLA delivered on all courts after, starting with LaBreche and Okazaki on court 5. The duo defeated Peyton Dueck and Katie Clevenger 21-15, 21-17. Their victory was followed by Perez and Boyd clinching a three-set win 21-16, 19-21, 15-10 on court one over Ella Connor and Erin Inskeep, spearheaded by Boyd's four aces in the third set. Cooper and Alden concluded the day with a three-set win on court three over Julia Westby and Ashleigh Adams, 21-18, 11-21, 15-9. UCLA overpowered Cal Poly 4-1 while winning all three of its three-set matches.
