UCLA Earns Third Big Ten Gymnastics Weekly Awards Sweep

For the third time this season, UCLA won at least a share of each Big Ten Conference weekly gymnastics award. Jordan Chiles was named the Gymnast of the Week for the fifth-straight week, Ciena Alipio earned Co-Event Specialist of the Week honors, and Tiana Sumanasekera received her second Freshman of the Week award.ย
The Bruin trio helped UCLA score a season-high 198.150 in a dual meet win over Washington on Jan. 30. UCLA, which remains unbeaten in Big Ten play, recorded season-best marks on vault (49.425), uneven bars (49.550) and floor exercise (national-best 49.700).ย
Chiles keeps her streak of Big Ten Gymnast of the Week awards alive. She has won all five awards this season and now has 16 career conference Gymnast of the Week awards, including 11 in the Big Ten. Chiles won the all-around on Friday with a score of 39.875, tying the national season-high that she set last week. She also swept the four individual events, winning vault with a 9.950, uneven bars with a season-high 9.975, and floor exercise with a 10.00 and tying for first on balance beam with a 9.950. This was her third sweep this season and second in a row. She also scored her second consecutive perfect 10 on floor, her eighth career 10 on floor and 14th career 10 overall (tied for third overall in UCLA history). She has scored a perfect 10 in three consecutive meets over a 13-day stretch and has totaled 20 victories in just five meets this season. Chiles has been ranked No. 1 in the nation in the all-around every week this season and is now ranked in the Top 5 on all four events (No. 2 on vault, No. 4 on bars and floor, No. 5 on beam).
Alipio earned her third Specialist of the Week honor this year after contributing two 9.950s and a 9.900 in UCLA's win over Washington. In just her second-ever collegiate uneven bars routine, she earned a leadoff 9.950 to place second on the event. She recorded her third consecutive balance beam victory with a 9.950, and then she completed her meet with a career-high 9.900 on floor exercise. Alipio is now averaging over 9.9 on bars (9.912) and beam (9.945) and over 9.850 on floor (9.856). Prior to this season, she had competed only on balance beam. She ranks in the Top 10 in the nation on beam (No. 3) and bars (No. 7). Alipio shares the weekly honor with Michigan State's Sage Kellerman.ย
Sumanasekera placed second in the all-around with a career-high score of 39.425 and earned career-best marks on vault (9.875, third place) and floor exercise (9.925, tied for third place) in the win over Washington. The five-time U.S. National Team member ranks No. 12 in the nation, No. 3 in the Big Ten and No. 2 amongst all freshmen in the all-around with a 39.375 average.ย
