No. 1 UCLA Sweeps Two Ranked Teams on Day One of East Meets West

Manhattan Beach, Calif. - No. 1 UCLA (13-2) opened the East Meets West Invitational with two ranked wins over No. 8 Arizona State (11-1 or 10-2) and No. 12 LSU (10-6). The Bruins won all 20 sets they played today.
UCLA started the day by handing ASU its first loss of the season, sweeping the first match of the day, 5-0, without dropping a set.ย
Ava Williamson and Jesse Dueck teamed up for the first win of the match, defeating McKenna Flaherty and Kristin Gilmour, 21-14, 21-15, on court 4. Minutes later, Kaley Mathews and Ensley Alden showed their dominance on court 2, beating former Bruin Reagan Hope and Daniella Kensinger 21-15, 21-14. Kenzie Brower and Mallory LaBreche clinched the match for UCLA, winning 22-20, 21-19 on court 5 over Kendall Whitmarsh and Olivia McElroy. Sally Perez and Maggie Boyd followed the pair's lead on court 1, sailing past Ava Kirunchyk and Samaya Morin 21-18, 21-13. Harper Cooper and Alexa Fernandez gave the Bruins a perfect finish on court 3, finishing Zoe Taylor and Arden Besecker, 21-15, 21-17.ย
UCLA faced No. 12 LSU in its second match of the day. The Tigers were coming off a reverse sweep loss to No. 10 California, and dropped five more in a row, taking a 5-0 loss. Williamson and Dueck directly attacked their competition on court 4, defeating Gracey Campbell and Aubrey O'Gorman, 23-21, 21-14. Feeling the momentum, Mathews and Alden took care of business, handing Skylar Martin and Tatum Finlason the 21-18, 21-19 point loss on court 2. Brower and LaBreche clinched their second consecutive match for the Bruins with their victory over Kate Baker and Zayna Meyer on court 5, 21-17, 21-12. Cooper and Fernandez easily took care of Emily Hellmuth and Bella Lagemann in a 21-14, 21-8 victory. Perez and Boyd closed out the day for the Bruins, winning an entertaining 21-11, 23-21 matchup over Julia Sprecher and Kenzey McGatlin on court 1.ย
