Bruins Fall in MPSF Championship, 3-2

Huntington Beach, Calif. - Second-seeded UCLA defeated top-seeded Stanford 3-1 in the MPSF semifinal but fell to third-seeded Texas in the championship match 3-2. The Longhorns captured their second consecutive conference title.

In the semifinal match against Stanford, the Bruins captured the first set on courts 1, 3 and 4 and went on to win on two of those courts. The Cardinal scored the first point with a straight-set win on court 2, but UCLA tied it up with a 21-14, 21-15 win on court 3 by Alexa Fernandez and Harper Cooper. Kenzie Brower and Mallory LaBreche rallied back after losing the first set on court 5, winning in three, 18-21, 21-12, 15-9 to put UCLA ahead 2-1. Sally Perez and Maggie Boyd won the match for the Bruins on court 1 over Kelly Belardi and Avery Jackson, 21-18, 17-21, 15-12.

The Bruins moved on to the final match against Texas, who had defeated USC 3-2 in the semifinal. UCLA won the first set on courts 2, 4 and 5 and took a 2-0 lead over the Longhorns. Kaley Mathews and Ensley Alden won the first point on court 2, defeating Anna Pavelkova and Kacka Pavelkova, 22-20, 21-14. Ava Williamson and Jesse Dueck won their match on court 4, beating Chloe Charles and Savannah Thomas, 21-17, 18-21, 15-11, but just as quickly as the Bruins charged ahead, the Longhorns won their matches, first on court 3, then court 1. The match was decided on court 5, with Macey Butler and Karin Zolnercikova coming from behind to win, 16-21, 21-18, 15-9.

UCLA finishes the regular season with a 30-6 record. Texas improves to 26-6 and wins the conference's automatic berth in the NCAA Championships. The NCAA selection show will take place on Sunday, April 26 at 10am PT on NCAA.com.
