UCLA Wins Two in Final Day of Best in the West Tournament

Laguna Beach, Calif. - No. 2 UCLA won a pair of matches on the final day of competition at the Best in the West Tournament, beating No. 4 USC, 3-2, and sweeping No. 10 Long Beach State, 5-0, to improve to 21-4 on the year.

The Bruins came from behind to beat the Trojans for the second time this season. After falling behind 2-0 after USC won on courts 5 and 2, UCLA won the next three matches, two of them in three sets. Harper Cooper and Alexa Fernandez earned the Bruins' first point on court 3, beating Quincy Stephens and Bella Satterwhite, 21-15, 27-25. Maggie Boyd and Sally Perez rallied after losing the first set to beat Zoey Henson and Sarah Wood, 16-21, 21-15, 15-7, tying up the match, 2-2. Adelina Okazaki and Mallory LaBreche also came from behind to win the deciding match over Kyra Zaengle/Calinda Kok, 12-21, 21-18, 15-13.

UCLA won its second match against Long Beach State, 5-0. Okazaki and LaBreche won the first point with a 21-17, 21-15 victory on court 4. Cooper and Fernandez won on court 2, 21-12, 25-23. Kaley Mathews and Taylor Ford clinched the victory for UCLA on court 3, beating Kiara Edwards and Savannah Standage, 17-21, 25-23, 15-11. UCLA won the other two points in three-set tiebreakers. Perez and Alden teamed up for the first time this season on court 1 and won, 18-21, 21-17, 15-12, and Ava Williamson and Cassie Dodd nabbed a 23-21, 14-21, 17-15 victory on court 5.

The Bruins will compete next week in the Center of Effort Challenge in San Luis Obispo.
