As a true freshman, Afflalo was one of two players, joining Jordan Farmar, to start every game (29). Named UCLA's Outstanding Defensive Player, Afflalo averaged 10.8 points (third on the team and ninth on the all-time Bruin freshman list) and led UCLA in three-point shooting (.386, 39-for-101) ... scored a season-high 22 points, with a season-high tying nine rebounds, versus USC in Pauley Pavilion ... HONORS -- Afflalo was selected by Rivals.com as an Honorable Mention Freshman All-American and named to the Pac-10 Conference All-Freshman team. At the Bruins' annual end-of-the-season awards dinner banquet, Afflalo was presented the Seymour Armond Memorial Award (most valuable freshman/with Jordan Farmar and Josh Shipp) and the Irv Pohlmeyer Memorial Award (outstanding defensive player). 2004 - In 2004 under coach Rod Palmer, a UCLA letterman from 1986-87 who ended his college career at UC Irvine, Afflalo led the Apaches to the school's first-ever Div. III CA State title, scoring 24 points, with five rebounds, in a 60-36 win over Oakland Bishop O'Dowd ... averaged 23.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.4 assists as a senior, leading Compton Centennial to a 32-3 record ... a starter in the 2004 McDonald's All-American game (as a starter, he played 17 minutes, with three points, four rebounds and one assist and steal), selected to the EA Sports Roundball Classic ... third-team Parade Magazine All-American and USA Today Super 25 selection ... named CalHi Sports All-State, CIF SS Div. III-A co-Player of the Year ... Los Angeles Times All-Star Boys Basketball Team ... entering his senior season, summer honors included PrepWestHoops No. 1 shooting guard in the West and No. 7 Player in the nation, Basketball News No. 4 shooting guard in the U. 2003 - During the summer, competed at the 6th annual USA Basketball Youth Development Festival at the U. S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO (Afflalo started two of five games and helped lead the West to a bronze medal, he averaged 15.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists) ... as a junior, Afflalo averaged 26.2 points (he scored 30 or more points on seven occasions, including 42 points vs. Carson at the one-day Pangos Dream Tournament in Pauley Pavilion in January), 5.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists ... led Centennial to a 19-11 overall record, to the CIF SS Div. III-A title game, the Div. III regional semifinals and a share of the Bay League title ... Wooden Award Div. III Player of the Year, All-State Cal-Hi Sports, the CIF-SS Div. III-A co-Player of the Year and the Long Beach Press-Telegram Dream Team Player of the Year.
