LAST WEEK'S RECAP: The Bruins started the week out on a positive note, boosted by a five-inning one-hitter by freshman lefty Mike Kunes (Chatsworth/Chatsworth HS) at UC Santa Barbara. Kunes picked up the second victory of his career and UCLA scored 10 runs on 11 hits to defeat the Gauchos 10-2. The Bruins tied a season high with five doubles, while junior second baseman Chase Utley and junior left fielder Bill Scott each homered. Junior DH Matt Pearl was 3-for-4 with three RBI as well.

UCLA then began a three-game weekend series with Cal State Northridge, with the Bruins emerging victorious in the first game 10-5. Junior right-hander Josh Karp pitched a two-hitter through six innings and allowed just two unearned runs to earn his fifth victory of the season. The Bruins three, four and five hitters combined for 12 hits and eight RBI. Junior first baseman Garrett Atkins was 3-for-4 with four runs, two RBI, a double and a home run. Junior left fielder Bill Scott was 4-for-5 with two runs, two RBI and a double, while junior catcher Forrest Johnson went 4-for-5 with one run scored and four RBI to go along with a double and a home run.

The series then moved to Matador Field Saturday afternoon, as Cal State Northridge evened the score with a 7-2 victory. CSUN freshman left hander Bill Murphy went the distance for the win, allowing two unearned runs on 10 Bruin hits. UCLA starter Bobby Roe suffered the loss for the Bruins. UCLA took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, taking advantage of two Matador errors, but CSUN answered with two runs of its own to tie 2-2. Cal State Northridge then exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth highlighted by a bases loaded single by left fielder Tim Arroyo, before adding another run in the sixth to seal the win.

Thanks in part to a tie-breaking three-run home run by Matt Pearl in the bottom of the sixth inning in the rubber match of the series on Sunday, UCLA had a 9-6 lead going into the top of the eighth, only to have the bullpen surrender four unearned runs. CSUN went on to add two more runs in the ninth for the 12-9 victory. Chase Utley and Bill Scott also hit home runs in the game, while Aldo Pinto and Freddie Mitchell each had doubles.

BRUINS LEAD PAC-10 HOME RUN RACE: Through 39 games, the Bruins sit atop the Pac-10 home run race with 75, 10 more than Arizona State with 65. Consquently, four Bruins rank among the top 10 home run hitters: Forrest Johnson (15), Bill Scott (14), Chase Utley (13) and Garrett Atkins (12). The UCLA record for home runs in a season is 142 set in 1997.

HENKEL, SCOTT ON NATIONAL PLAYER OF YEAR WATCH: Junior left-hander Rob Henkel and junior left fielder Bill Scott have both been tabbed as players to watch by Baseball America for the National Player of the Year award. Henkel was twice named Louisville Slugger's National Player of the Week and Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week. Henkel had a phenomenal string of three straight games with at least 16 strikeouts, including a school-record breaking 18 K performance in the Bruins' Pac-10 opener with Washington. He also threw back-to-back complete-game victories. Scott enters the week tied for the Pac-10 lead with a .422 batting average and 68 hits.

UCLA PLAYER NOTABLES:

  • JR LF Bill Scott (Granda Hills/Alemany HS) led the Bruins with the bat last week, going 10-for-18 (.556) with nine RBI, a double and two home runs, while scoring five runs in the Bruins' last four games. Scott was 8-for-13 (.615) in the three-game series with Cal State Northridge, also scoring three runs with six RBI, a double and a home run. In Game One vs. CSUN, Scott was 4-for-5 with two RBI and a double, and in Game Three was 3-for-4 with four RBI including a three-run home run. He improved his batting average from .405 to .422 throughout the course of the week. Scott has tallied 19 multiple-hit games and 13 multiple-RBI games so far this season.

  • JR CF Charles Merricks (Oxnard/Channel Islands HS) played center field, right field and pitched in the Bruins' 12-9 loss vs. Cal State Northridge last Sunday. Merricks made an appearance on the mound for the first time since 1998, when pitched nine innings in eight games as a freshman. Merricks faced two non-consecutive batters in the eighth inning, retiring both with runners on base. He started the top of the ninth, getting the lead-off batter to ground out to second, before giving up a walk and a base hit. Merricks was then sent back into the outfield, but both runners later scored.

  • JR 2B Chase Utley (Long Beach/Long Beach Poly HS) is hitting .465 (20-for-43) with 10 RBI, six doubles and three home runs during a current nine-game hitting streak. Utley also doubled in six straight games during the streak.

  • JR DH/OF Matt Pearl (Bakersfield/Garces Memorial) has knocked in at least three RBI in four of his last five games, while going 9-for-25 (.360) at the plate in his last five games as well.

  • SR IF Aldo Pinto (Sylmar, Kennedy HS) and RS-SO CF Freddie Mitchell (Lakeland, Fla./Kathleen HS) made the most of a rare start last Sunday vs. CSUN. Pinto was 3-for-5 with a double, while Mitchell was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Mitchell is also a star wide receiver on the UCLA football team and is missing spring practice to play baseball.

THIS WEEKEND'S STARTING ROTATION:

  • JR LHP Rob Henkel (La Mesa/Monte Vista HS) will make his first start in 13 days after resting last weekend in preparation for the ASU series. In 56.0 IP, Henkel is 5-2 with a 3.86 ERA and 88 strikeouts. In his last start vs. USC April 7, he suffered his first loss after four consecutive victories including back-to-back complete games. During that string of four straight wins, Henkel struck out 61 batters in 31 innings and gave up just four walks, while setting a school record with 18 Ks vs. Washington March 25.
  • SO RHP Josh Karp (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) was won three straight decisions vs. Oregon State, USC and the most recent being in UCLA's only victory vs. Cal State Northridge last weekend. Karp struck out a career-high 12 batters vs. USC April 8. He has allowed just five hits and two earned runs, while striking out 18 in his last 13 innings pitched. Karp is 5-1 with a 4.20 ERA and 52 Ks. Opponents have just a .217 average vs. Karp.
  • JR LHP Bobby Roe (Plano, Tex./Plano HS) enters Saturday's start with a 5-3 record, a 4.85 ERA and 50 strikeouts. Roe has hit 15 opposing batters this season, tying a single-season UCLA record set by Rick Heineman in 1995. He suffered a loss in his last start vs. Cal State Northridge, allowing six runs on seven hits through five innings.

SCOUTING USC: The Trojans and Bruins are all too familiar with each other this season, as the two teams have played five games this season with USC leading the season series 3-2. But UCLA won two of the three games which counted in the Pac-10 standings two weeks ago at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Trojans begin the week behind the Bruins in fourth place in the conference with a 7-5 league record. USC, coached by Mike Gillespie, has struggled a bit as of late and has lost four of its last six games beginning with the two Pac-10 losses in Westwood. Last weekend, California took two of three games from the Trojans in Berkeley. USC won the first game 6-5, but the Bears came back to take the next two 9-5 and 4-3. Senior third baseman Justin Gemoll leads the Trojans with a .380 batting average and has 13 home runs and 41 RBI. Sophomore catcher Beau Craig leads the team with 14 home runs, good for third in the Pac-10 home run race. As a team, USC is fifth in the conference with a .296 batting average and fourth with a 5.10 team ERA.

SCOUTING ARIZONA STATE: The Bruins will have their hands full when they make the trip to Tempe this week to face the third-ranked Sun Devils. Arizona State, coached by Pat Murphy, enters the week tied with Stanford for first place in the Pac with a 9-3 league record, 33-9 overall. The Sun Devils lead the conference in nine offensive categories including batting average (.344), slugging percentage (.565), on-base percentage (.451), runs scored (458) and RBI (412). Arizona State also ranks second in Pac-10 pitching with a 3.88 ERA. ASU has won 13 of its last 16 games, including a three-game sweep of Washington State in Pullman last weekend. Junior catcher Casey Myers leads the team with a .422 clip, tied with UCLA's Bill Scott for the highest average in the conference. Senior left-fielder Mitch Jones leads the Sun Devils and the Pac-10 with 22 home runs, 67 RBI, 64 runs scored and 147 total bases. The ASU pitching staff is led by sophomore left-hander Jon Switzer and junior right-hander Chad Pennington. Switzer is 8-1 with a 2.66 ERA and 87 strikeouts, while Pennington is 7-1 with a 5.23 ERA and 64 Ks. ASU leads the all-time series 87-52, but the Bruins swept the three-game series last year in Westwood by scores of 11-10, 9-3 and 8-6.

Head Coach Gary Adams - UCLA's All-Time Winningest Baseball Coach: In his 26th year at the helm of the UCLA baseball program, head coach Gary Adams begins the new millennium having added yet two more milestones to his resume in 1999. With a 12-3 victory over then-No.2 Georgia Tech on Feb. 6 at Jackie Robinson Stadium, Adams secured his 800th win as the skipper of the Bruins. Just over a month later, Adams earned all-time career victory #1,000 March 2 at Arizona. Adams is the all-time winningest head baseball coach in UCLA history, a feat accomplished March 2, 1997 with win #748 coming at the Hormel Foods Classic in the Metrodome in Minnesota. Adams has compiled a 852-689-7 (.552) record at UCLA. Thirty-three of Adams' former UCLA players have reached the major leagues. Former Bruins have made their major league debut in each of the past two seasons. Last year, Dave Roberts become the latest Bruin to make his major league debut with the Indians. 1998, Troy Glaus and Jim Parque, who were teammates on UCLA's 1997 College World Series team, reached the majors. Adams was the head coach at UC Irvine for five years before coming to UCLA and guided the Anteaters to back-to-back NCAA Division II national championships in 1973 and 1974. In 1974, Adams was named as the Division II Coach of the Year. Adams' career record is 1,040-759-12 (.577). He played second base for the Bruins in 1959, 1960 and 1962. As a senior, he was selected team captain and MVP. Adams is assisted by Vince Beringhele, Rob Hinds and Tim Leary.

HOME RUN RECORD SET VS. UNC AND BRADLEY: Before the forgettable 13-run ninth inning in game one vs. North Carolina on Feb. 18, five different players slugged seven home runs to set a new school UCLA record for long balls hit in a game. Chase Utley led off the game with a homer and then in the second inning, Forrest Johnson, Adam Berry (Richardson, Texas/J.J. Pearce HS) and Nick Lyon hit back-to-back-to-back home runs. Garrett Atkins added to the home run derby in the fourth inning, until Utley and Atkins hit back-to-back shots in the seventh to round out the record setting night.

On March 10 vs. Bradley, UCLA equaled the feat it accomplished just three weeks earlier. Utley and Johnson went deep twice, while Atkins, Ryan Hamill (Woodland Hills/UNLV) and Berry rounded out the home run barrage that enabled UCLA to rout the Braves 14-4.

REECE HITS FOR THE CYCLE: In his first collegiate opening-day start and only his fourth career start at first base, Eric Reece (El Dorado Hills/Oak Ridge HS) hit for the cycle against Hawaii at Rainbow Stadium Feb. 3. He was the first Bruin to hit for the cycle since current Philadelphia Phillie Eric Valent did it in 1998. Reece led off his 2000 season with a run-scoring triple and then led off the second inning with a solo-shot to right-center, becoming the first Bruin to homer at Rainbow Stadium since Jason Green went deep on Jan. 31, 1998. After singling in the fourth, Reece waited until the top of the ninth inning to complete the cycle when he lined a run-scoring double to right center. For the game, Reece went 4-5 with three runs and three RBI and finished the three-game series going 8-16 with four runs, seven RBI, three doubles, one triple and one home run. He doubled in each of the three games vs. Hawaii.

ROSTER NOTES: Senior outfielder Brian Baron (Newhall/Hart HS) will redshirt the 2000 season, after re-aggravating a knee injury at UNLV Feb. 13 and undergoing surgery ... Junior CF Charles Merricks (Oxnard/Channel Islands HS) has switched his uniform number from #20 to #42, effective 3/10/00 ... Freshman C Shane Miranda (Camarillo/Camarillo HS) has switched his uniform number from #16 to #20.
