KARP NAMED PAC-10 PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Sophomore right-hander Josh Karp (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) was named the Pac-10's Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 17-23 as he held Arizona State, the Pac-10's best hitting team and fourth best in the nation, to just two hits through 7.1 innings last Saturday in Tempe. Karp allowed three runs, only one of them earned and he struck out 10 batters. It was his longest outing so far this season, and the second straight start in which he has allowed just two hits. Karp has now won four straight decisions and is 6-1 with a 3.78 ERA on the year. He is the second Bruin to garner Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors, and the third player overall this season.
UCLA LOOKS TO REBOUND FROM MIDWEEK LOSSES: The Bruins have now lost four straight games after falling to San Diego 10-1 and No. 21 Cal State Fullerton 8-3 earlier this week at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Monday evening, USD took an early seven-run lead after three innings, while senior right-hander Kevin Gray pitched a complete game to lead the Toreros past the Bruins. UCLA could only muster one run on eight hits, only the third time this season the Bruins have been held to a single run. Bill Scott and Matt Pearl each had two hits, while Ryan Hamill's RBI single in the fourth inning scored UCLA's only run. Junior right-hander Chad Cislak suffered the loss, to go 0-5 on the season.
Tuesday night was no easy task as the 21st ranked Titans came to Westwood, and Cal State Fullerton scored eight runs on 10 hits while the Bruins stranded a season-high 14 runners on base and failed to push a run across until the ninth when Chase Utley belted a three-run home run. Freshman lefty Mike Kunes (2-2) suffered the loss. Garrett Atkins led the Bruins, going 3-for-5.
LAST WEEK'S RECAP: The Bruins fell upon some hard times last week, losing three of four games to USC and third-ranked Arizona State. UCLA opened its four-game stint on the road with a 6-2 loss vs. the Trojans at Dedeaux Field, a makeup game for an earlier rainout in February. Junior right-hander Chad Cislak threw five scoreless inning and allowed just two hits in his first start of the season, but it wasn't quite enough as the Trojans outlasted the Bruins 6-2 in the non-conference matchup. USC scored three runs, two of which were unearned, in the first inning and the Bruins could not quite bounce back.
Then UCLA headed to Tempe for a big Pac-10 showdown with the Arizona State Sun Devils and even after losing two of three, remained second in the conference behind ASU and Stanford. In Game One Thursday, the Bruins held an 8-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth, before ASU exploded for seven runs to stun UCLA with a 10-8 victory. The Bruins bounced back in Game Two Friday, thanks in part to a commanding performance on the mound from Josh Karp and an offensive explosion. Junior second baseman Chase Utley was 2-for-5 including a two-run home run and a three-run home run for a season-high five RBI. Junior left-fielder Bill Scott was also 3-for-6 with a double, while sophomore third baseman Randall Shelley and junior shortstop Josh Canales had two hits apiece. Redshirt freshman DH Jim Hemming also hit a home run. ASU sought revenge in the rubber match Saturday afternoon, handing the Bruins a 18-3 defeat. Junior first baseman Garrett Atkins was 3-for-5, while Scott also homered.
KARP INVITED TO USA BASEBALL NATIONAL TEAM TRIALS: Sophomore right-hander Josh Karp has been invited to participate in the 2000 USA Baseball National Team Trials to be held in Tucson, Ariz. June 16-21, USA Baseball announced last Wednesday. Karp is one of three players (USC's Mark Prior and Stetson's Len DiNardo) from the 1999 National Team that have been invited back to participate in the trials this year. The National Team will be selected from a pool of 35-40 players at the trials and USA Baseball will announce the names of the remaining players to be invited by the end of May. Other Pac-10 invitees include Stanford's Brian Sager and Arizona State's Jon Switzer.
SEASON OF STREAKS: The Bruins have endured a somewhat streak-ridden season, and are entering this weekend's series in Pullman on the losing side having dropped seven of the last eight. UCLA opened the season winning six of its first seven, then lost nine of the next 10. The Bruins then bounced back to win 17 of its next 20, including a season-high eight-game win streak, before this latest losing skid.
BRUIN POWER SURGE: UCLA has slugged a Pac-10 leading 82 home runs so far this season, an average of 1.8 per game. The Bruins have gone deep at least once in all but nine games and earlier this season set a single-game school record with seven home runs vs. North Carolina Feb. 18. UCLA equaled the feat just three weeks later with another seven homers vs. Bradley March 10. The Bruins have hit five homers in a game on three occasions, and four in two games. Consequently, four Bruins rank among the top 10 home run hitters in the Pac: Chase Utley (17), Forrest Johnson (15), Bill Scott (15) and Garrett Atkins (12). Here's a look at the Bruins' home run breakdown for 2000:
Solo HR: 45 (Utley 9, Atkins 8, Lyon 7, Johnson 7, Scott 5,Berry 3, Hemming 2, Pearl 2, Reece, Hofman)
2-Run HR: 24 (Scott 9, Utley 6, Atkins 4, Johnson 3, Shelley 2)
3-Run HR: 11 (Johnson 4, Utley 2, Hamill, Pearl, Lyon, Merricks, Scott)
Grand Slam: 2 (Johnson, Hemming)
OOPS!: Entering this week, UCLA leads the Pac-10 in errors with 83 miscues and has a league-low .950 fielding percentage. The Bruins have committed at least one error in 14 straight games and are 5-9 during that stretch. UCLA has booted the ball in all but eight games this season. Most of the problems have occurred on the left side of the infield, as sophomore third baseman Randall Shelley and junior shortstop Josh Canales lead the team with 13 and 12 errors respectively.
HOW THE BRUINS STACK UP AGAINST THE NATION: Junior lefty Rob Henkel ranks second in the nation with 13.6 strikeouts per game, while Bill Scott is tied for 44th with his .411 batting average after this weekend's games. In the home run race, Chase Utley ranks 10th in the nation with .37 long balls per game, while Scott is tied for 12th with .36 and junior catcher Forrest Johnson is tied for 14th with .35 homers per game.
UTLEY, SCOTT CLIMBING UCLA, PAC-10 CAREER CHARTS: Junior second baseman Chase Utley and junior left fielder Bill Scott are climbing their way up the Pac-10 and UCLA all-time home run charts as the season progresses. Utley now has 48 career home runs tying him for fourth highest among UCLA home run leaders with Eric Byrnes (95-98) and ninth among all-time Pac-10 sluggers. Scott's 47 home runs tie him with former Bruin Ryan McGuire (91-93) for sixth among UCLA hitters and 10th in the Pac.
ATKINS, SCOTT CAREER BATTING LEADERS: Bill Scott and junior first baseman Garrett Atkins sit atop the UCLA all-time batting average list at one and two respectively. Scott has a .378 all-time average (188-for-498), while Atkins enters the weekend series with career .370 clip (243-for-658).
HENKEL, SCOTT ON NATIONAL PLAYER OF YEAR WATCH: Junior left-hander Rob Henkel and junior left fielder Bill Scott have both been tabbed as players to watch by Baseball America for the National Player of the Year award. Henkel was twice named Louisville Slugger's National Player of the Week and Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week. Henkel had a phenomenal string of three straight games with at least 16 strikeouts, including a school-record break ing 18 K performance in the Bruins' Pac-10 opener with Washington. He also threw back-to-back complete-game victories. Scott enters the week tied for the Pac-10 lead with a .424 batting average and 70 hits.
UCLA PLAYER NOTABLES:
JR 2B Chase Utley (Long Beach/Long Beach Poly HS) had his 13-game hitting
streak snapped in the Bruins' 10-1 loss vs. San Diego April 24. He has hit
safely in 32 of his last 35 games and has slugged five home runs in the last
seven games, giving him the team lead with 17. Earlier this season, Utley had a
career-high 17-game hitting streak.
JR DH/OF Matt Pearl (Bakersfield/Garces Memorial) is batting .367 (11-30) during his current career-high seven game hitting streak. During the streak he has also slugged one home run, two doubles and knocked in seven. Pearl had a season-high three hits at Arizona State April 20, going 3-for-6 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. He has the highest batting average of any Bruin in conference play with a .517 clip (15-for-29).
JR 1B Garrett Atkins (Irvine/University HS) has a five-game hitting streak in which he is batting .422 (10-for-22). Atkins, though, has only one extra basehit during the streak and has been without a home run for the last eight games.
THIS WEEKEND'S STARTING ROTATION:
JR LHP Rob Henkel (La Mesa/Monte Vista HS) picked up a no-decision last week
at Arizona State, even after allowing just two runs on six hits through six
innings. Henkel left the game with the Bruins leading 8-2, only to have the
bullpen give up seven runs in the eighth. In 62.0 IP, Henkel is 5-2 with a 3.77
ERA and 94 strikeouts. Prior to his second to last start vs. USC April 7,
Henkel picked up four consecutive victories including back-to-back complete
games vs. Washington and Oregon State. During that string of four straight
wins, Henkel struck out 61 batters in 31 innings and gave up just four walks,
while setting a school record with 18 Ks vs. Washington March 25.
SO RHP Josh Karp (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) was won four straight decisions vs. Oregon State, USC, Cal State Northridge and most recently Arizona State. Karp struck out a career-high 12 batters vs. USC April 8. He has allowed just seven hits and three earned runs, while striking out 28 in his last 20.1 innings pitched. Karp is 6-1 with a 3.78 ERA and 62 Ks. Opponents have just a .202 average vs. Karp.
JR LHP Bobby Roe (Plano, Tex./Plano HS) enters Sunday's start with a 5-4 record, a 5.27 ERA and 52 strikeouts. Roe has hit 18 opposing batters this season, breaking a single-season UCLA record set (15) by Rick Heineman in 1995. Roe has lost his last two starts vs. Cal State Northridge and Arizona State. He struck out a career and season high nine batters in the second game of a double header vs. Harvard March 18.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON STATE: The Cougars, coached by Steve Farrington, bring a 16-26 overall record into action this weekend and enter the week in last place in the Pac-10 with a 4-11 league mark. But WSU is on the rise, having snapped a nine-game conference losing streak with a pair of victories at Arizona last weekend. The Cougs have been dependant upon the hot pitching of senior left hander Matt O'Brien, who is now 7-3 with two complete games, three saves and a league-leading strikeout-walk ratio of 37:12. At the plate, WSU is led by senior first baseman Ray Hattenburg and junior right fielder Jason Grove. Hattenburg is hitting a team-high .373 with 15 doubles, 21 multiple-hit games and has failed to record a hit in only 10 games this season. Grove is hitting .339 with two home runs, 14 RBI and six doubles since coming back from a hand injury that sidelined him much of the season. UCLA leads the all-time series 17-6 dating back to 1967, and last year swept the Cougs at Jackie Robinson Stadium by scores of 7-5, 15-8 and 6-5. The Bruins have not made the trek to Pullman since 1971, when they swept the Cougars in a doubleheader 5-1 and 11-0.
HOME SWEET HOME: Two Bruins, junior right fielder Nick Lyon and sophomore right hander Josh Karp, are returning to their home state of Washington. Lyon and Karp hail from Western Washington, though, from the Seattle suburbs of Monroe and Bothell respectively.
COUGAR CONNECTION: Josh Karp's father, Joe Karp, pitched for the Washington State Cougars from 1966-68 under head coach Bobo Brayton.
Head Coach Gary Adams - UCLA's All-Time Winningest Baseball Coach: In his 26th year at the helm of the UCLA baseball program, head coach Gary Adams begins the new millennium having added yet two more milestones to his resume in 1999. With a 12-3 victory over then-No.2 Georgia Tech on Feb. 6 at Jackie Robinson Stadium, Adams secured his 800th win as the skipper of the Bruins. Just over a month later, Adams earned all-time career victory #1,000 March 2 at Arizona. Adams is the all-time winningest head baseball coach in UCLA history, a feat accomplished March 2, 1997 with win #748 coming at the Hormel Foods Classic in the Metrodome in Minnesota. Adams has compiled a 853-694-7 (.552) record at UCLA. Thirty-three of Adams' former UCLA players have reached the major leagues. Former Bruins have made their major league debut in each of the past two seasons. Last year, Dave Roberts become the latest Bruin to make his major league debut with the Indians. 1998, Troy Glaus and Jim Parque, who were teammates on UCLA 's 1997 College World Series team, reached the majors. Adams was the head coach at UC Irvine for five years before coming to UCLA and guided the Anteaters to back-to-back NCAA Division II national championships in 1973 and 1974. In 1974, Adams was named as the Division II Coach of the Year. Adams' career record is 1,041-764-12 (.577). He played second base for the Bruins in 1959, 1960 and 1962. As a senior, he was selected team captain and MVP. Adams is assisted by Vince Beringhele, Rob Hinds and Tim Leary.
HOME RUN RECORD SET VS. UNC AND BRADLEY: Before the forgettable 13-run ninth inning in game one vs. North Carolina on Feb. 18, five different players slugged seven home runs to set a new school UCLA record for long balls hit in a game. Chase Utley led off the game with a homer and then in the second inning, Forrest Johnson, Adam Berry (Richardson, Texas/J.J. Pearce HS) and Nick Lyon hit back-to-back-to-back home runs. Garrett Atkins added to the home run derby in the fourth inning, until Utley and Atkins hit back-to-back shots in the seventh to round out the record setting night.
On March 10 vs. Bradley, UCLA equaled the feat it accomplished just three weeks earlier. Utley and Johnson went deep twice, while Atkins, Ryan Hamill and Berry rounded out the home run barrage that enabled UCLA to rout the Braves 14-4.
REECE HITS FOR THE CYCLE: In his first collegiate opening-day start and only his fourth career start at first base, Eric Reece (El Dorado Hills/Oak Ridge HS) hit for the cycle against Hawaii at Rainbow Stadium Feb. 3. He was the first Bruin to hit for the cycle since current Philadelphia Phillie Eric Valent did it in 1998. Reece led off his 2000 season with a run-scoring triple and then led off the second inning with a solo-shot to right-center, becoming the first Bruin to homer at Rainbow Stadium since Jason Green went deep on Jan. 31, 1998. After singling in the fourth, Reece waited until the top of the ninth inning to complete the cycle when he lined a run-scoring double to right center. For the game, Reece went 4-5 with three runs and three RBI and finished the three-game series going 8-16 with four runs, seven RBI, three doubles, one triple and one home run. He doubled in each of the three games vs. Hawaii.
MITCHELL SPLITTING TIME BETWEEN THE GRIDIRON AND THE DIAMOND: One of the top wide-receivers on the football team this year for the Bruins, Freddie Mitchell (Lakeland, Fla./Kathleen HS) is spending his "off-season" on the baseball diamond. Mitchell made his first collegiate baseball start Feb. 12 vs. UNLV and picked up his first career hit and RBI by legging out an infield ground ball.
ROSTER NOTES: Senior outfielder Brian Baron (Newhall/Hart HS) will redshirt the 2000 season, after re-aggravating a knee injury at UNLV Feb. 13 and undergoing surgery ... Junior CF Charles Merricks (Oxnard/Channel Islands HS) has switched his uniform number from #20 to #42, effective 3/10/00 ... Freshman C Shane Miranda (Camarillo/Camarillo HS) has switched his uniform number from #16 to #20.
ATKINS, KARP, SCOTT, UTLEY SELECTED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS: Junior leftfielder Bill Scott was named to Collegiate Baseball's preseason All-America first-team and Baseball America's second team. A freshman phenom on the mound a year ago, sophomore right-hander Josh Karp was named to Baseball America's first-team All-America list. Junior third baseman Garrett Atkins was chosen by Baseball America as a second-team All-American and by Collegiate Baseball as a third-team All-American, while junior second baseman Chase Utley earned Baseball America first-team honors and Collegiate Baseball third-team honors.
