Bruins' Post-Season Run Ends At Louisiana State

June 9, 2000
LOS ANGELES - The UCLA baseball team's World Series hopes came to halt in Baton Rouge, La. as the No. 2 nationally seeded Louisiana State Tigers defeated the Bruins in two straight 8-2 and 14-8 in the NCAA Super Regional at Alex Box Stadium last weekend. Before arriving in Baton Rouge, the Bruins were coming off a three-game sweep of the Oklahoma City Regional and had won 13 of their last 17 games and 10 of the last 12. UCLA concluded the season with a 38-26 overall record, reaching the 30-win mark for the fourth time in five seasons, and the 18th time in 26 seasons under head coach Gary Adams.
LSU stopped the Bruins cold in their tracks in Game One Friday, June 2, as Tiger starting pitcher Brian Tallet held UCLA to a season-low two hits. The Bruins' first hit of the night came in the seventh inning, a two-run home run by junior catcher Forrest Johnson to put UCLA on the board. But by that time, LSU had accrued a 6-0 lead before adding two more in the bottom of the seventh to seal the 8-2 victory. UCLA starter Rob Henkel (6-4) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on four hits through five innings. Sophomore designated hitter Adam Berry had the Bruins' second hit, a single following Johnson's 23rd home run of the season. Junior first baseman Garrett Atkins had his season-high 22-game hitting streak snapped, the longest in the Pac-10 this season.
With their backs agains the wall in Game Two Saturday, June 3, the Bruins found themselves trailing LSU 10-0 after just four innings. UCLA starting pitcher Josh Karp (10-2), who suffered just his first loss in the last 13 starts, had a rough outing, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits through 3.1 innings.
UCLA rallied with five runs in the bottom of the fourth as Atkins led off the inning with a double. Junior left fielder Bill Scott drove in Atkins with a triple and scored on an error by the center fielder. Back-to-back singles by freshman designated hitter Jim Hemming and junior center fielder Charles Merricks then set up a three-run home run by sophomore third baseman Randall Shelley to cut the score to 10-5. Junior second baseman Chase Utley knocked a two-run home run in the seventh after LSU added a run in the sixth. But with the Tigers leading 12-8 in the bottom of the eighth, UCLA left the tying run at the plate on a bases loaded fly out by Utley. LSU pulled away with two more r uns in the top of the ninth to seal the 14-8 win and a trip to the College World Series.
