No. 24 UCLA Baseball Registers 8-0 Win at Cal Poly in Game Two

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Right-hander Trevor Bauer scattered two hits in seven shutout innings to lead the No. 24 UCLA baseball team past Cal Poly, 8-0, in the second game of Monday's doubleheader at Baggett Stadium. Bauer (3-1) earned the victory after logging 12 strikeouts and two walks.
UCLA (9-7) bounced back after dropping a 2-1 decision to the host Mustangs (7-9) in the opening game Monday. The 8-0 victory in game two marked UCLA's fifth shutout in 16 games this spring.
The Bruins scored six of their eight runs in the first two innings of Monday's second game. Tyler Rahmatulla went 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI, while Tyler Heineman and Dean Espy each went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
Cal Poly left-hander Kyle Anderson (1-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) and six hits in one inning as the Mustangs' starter. Anderson faced four batters in the second inning without recording an out.
UCLA jumped to a 6-0 lead after two innings, scoring two in the first and adding four in the second. The Bruins took advantage of three hits, two walks and one sacrifice bunt to score twice in the top of the first. Rahmatulla led off the frame with a double and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A single to right field by Espy scored Rahmatulla. After one base-hit and two walks, loading the bases, Heineman drew a walk to score Espy.
In the second inning, Adrian Williams led off with a sharp single to right field and moved to second base on a bunt single by Rahmatulla. On a sacrifice bunt to the left of the pitcher's mound, Brian Carroll was safe on a high throw from Anderson to load the bases. A single through the left side by Espy scored Williams, before a fielder's choice grounder by Chris Giovinazzo plated Rahmatulla. A one-out single by Trevor Brown and two-out base-hit by Heineman each scored run runner to push UCLA's cushion to 6-0.
A two-out single to left by Rahmatulla in the top of the fifth handed the Bruins a 7-0 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Cody Regis belted a double off the base of the center field wall, moved to third base on a flyout and scored on a groundout to shortstop by Amaral.
UCLA will open Pac-10 play at USC on Friday, March 25. Game time at the Trojans' Dedeaux Field is slated for 6 p.m. Saturday's game is at 6 p.m. and Sunday's series finale is at 1 p.m. All three games will feature a live audio broadcast online, free of charge, at uclabruins.com.
Game Notes: Trevor Bauer has struck out at least 10 batters in four of his five starts this season ... Bauer's 12 strikeouts against Cal Poly pushed his career total to 315, the third-highest in UCLA history (eclipsed Pete Janicki's 307 career strikeouts) ... Bauer has logged at least 10 strikeouts in 13 games through his career ... UCLA last pitched at least five shutouts during the 2008 season (five) ... the series was shortened to a doubleheader on Monday after heavy rains in San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Saturday and Sunday forced the two teams to alter their weekend schedule ... the third game of the series will not be rescheduled ... with two runs in the first inning of game two Monday, the Bruins have outscored their opposition by a 21-1 margin in the first inning through 16 games this season.
