Mission Statement

The health and welfare of the student-athlete shall be paramount in the department. UCLA Sports Medicine strives to develop a program that effectively utilizes the talents of a diverse staff. Through communication, creativity and innovation, the athletic training staff, team physicians, sport psychologist, dietitian and specialists collaborate in a team approach in order to meet the needs of the student-athlete. The student-athlete will work with the most educated and clinically proficient certified athletic trainers available, who are held to high standards from their peers, as well as the UCLA Department of Athletics.

In addition to injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, student-athlete education will also be made available in the area of lifelong health practices. Through the vast referral network within the department, this education will be tailored to meet the interests of the student-athlete. The certified athletic training staff shall also be aggressive in pursuing its own continuing education as to remain on the cutting edge of the ever changing sports medicine horizon, allowing the department to provide the best available health care to its student-athletes.


About UCLA Sports Medicine

The UCLA Sports Medicine Department is located in the Acosta Athletic Training Center which is a state-of-the-art coed facility that boasts 8,000 square feet of modalities, rehabilitation equipment, walk-in whirlpools, SwimEx aquatic pool, an Alter-G anti-gravity treadmill, cardio equipment, Pilates equipment and private offices. Daily operation includes a comprehensive program entailing injury prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation, reconditioning following surgery or injury, as well as education and counseling for the student-athletes. MORE


Performance Nutrition

The mission of the UCLA Performance Nutrition Department is to provide all student-athletes with accurate, scientific-based nutrition resources, knowledge and care to fuel top sport performance. Also, to assist UCLA athletes in acquiring skills needed to optimize health for their entire lifetime, both in and beyond athletics. Athletic Performance Dietitians are Registered Dietitians trained in nutrition. They work side-by-side with the Sports Medicine staff and the Athletic Performance staff to ensure that every rep in the weight room, every drill in practice, and every play in competition is effective and injury-free. Sport Psychology

Sport psychology at UCLA takes many forms. Student-athletes can work individually with a counselor to address personal and performance issues which might be inhibiting achievement of your maximum potential in the classroom or in competition. Groups and workshops offered by CAPS can also be used to address these concerns. Coaches and other Athletic Department staff can consult with CAPS staff about an individual student-athlete or about team concerns. Workshops for teams can be used to address performance related issues such as mental skills training and team building. MORE
