Madie Smith begins her first season as the Director of Volleyball Operations for the UCLA women's beach volleyball program in 2016.
Following a successful playing career as a Bruin, Smith graduated from UCLA in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology.
She began her collegiate playing career as a member of the Bruins' indoor volleyball program in 2010. Playing as a defensive specialist/libero, Smith played in nine matches and 23 sets during the 2010 season, making two starts. She tallied one kill, 108 assists and 47 digs (2.04 digs per set) and posted her first double-double of her career with 52 assists and 12 digs at Arizona.
Smith was a member of the Bruins' 2011 NCAA Championship team, making one start and playing in three matches and five sets during the campaign.
She did not play during the 2012-13 season and switched to beach volleyball at UCLA for the 2014 season. She played her entire first season with the UCLA women's beach volleyball team at the No. 2 slot with her partner Zoë Nightingale as the pair went 2-13 in their first season. She then partnered exclusively with Elise Zappia at both the No. 1 and No. 2 flights, going 18-10 overall in her senior season (2015). She and Zappia won gold at the inaugural "Dad" Center Founder's Cup last season at Queen's Beach in Waikiki, Hawai'i.
The Corona del Mar, Calif., native comes from a long lineage of Bruin alums, becoming the 10th family member to attend UCLA after a stellar prep career at Corona del Mar High School. Smith was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball at Corona del Mar HS and a four-time Pacific Coast League honoree, earning first-team honors her last three seasons and Most Valuable Player accolades as a senior and sophomore. Named All-CIF first team from 2007-09, she led Orange County with 1,098 assists as a senior, adding 23 aces, 92 kills and 254 digs as the Sea Kings made a pair of CIF Division II and CIF Southern Section State runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2009, as well as four league titles. She played club with Orange County Volleyball.
