UCLA's football captain in 1931, a boxing champion and a hockey letterman, Norman Duncan taught physical education in city high schools before returning to the university in 1936. In addition to teaching in the physical education department, Duncan was the freshman football coach and a boxing and ice hockey coach. He then spent five years in the army, mostly in South Pacific during World War II, was discharged as full colonel and returned to UCLA to head the physical education department. Later, he directed operations at Pauley Pavilion and other athletic facilities until retiring in 1972.

Duncan, who also was an NFL official for 15 years, was inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990.
