LONG BEACH, Calif. - Junior Sean Kern scored four goals, including two in the second overtime period, to lift the top-ranked Bruins over ninth-ranked Long Beach State 13-11, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo action at Belmont Plaza Pool Tuesday night.
Kern, a junior, scored with 2:00 left in the second OT period, just 27 seconds after the 49ers' Patrick Cochran had tied the game at 11-11 with his second goal of the night. Kern scored again in a man-advantage situation with 0:32 remaining for the final margin.
Long Beach State's Chris Segesman forced the overtime by hitting a two-point goal with 1:14 remaining in regulation. Both teams had chances in the final minute, but neither team could score.
UCLA (7-1/2-0 MPSF) started both halves in good form, outscoring the 49ers, 4-1, in the first and third periods. Long Beach (5-6/1-2 MPSF) however, was able to take the lead at halftime after outscoring the Bruins, 6-1, in the second period on goals by Cochran (2-pointer), Aaron Holloway (2-pointer), Segesman and Corey Dolley.
Kern led UCLA in scoring with four points, with Brian Brown (2 goals, 1 2-pointer) and Blake Wellen adding three points each. Cochran and Segesman led the 49ers with three points each, each player making one two-point goal.
LBSU's Robert Smith had 14 saves in the game, while UCLA's Parsa Bonderson was credited with nine saves.
