Men's Soccer Capitalizes On Second Chance, Defeats Northridge 2-1 In Overtime

Northridge, Calif. - In a bizarre turn of events, the UCLA men's soccer team went from being one minute away from losing for the first time ever to Cal State Northridge to winning its sixth consecutive game, defeating the Matadors 2-1 in double overtime.
Up 1-0 after a Federico Arroyo goal in the first half, Cal State Northridge staved off several UCLA chances and appeared to have the game virtually locked up with one minute remaining on the clock. But after Referee Ed Cantor signaled for a clock stoppage and did not receive it from the clock operator, he ordered the clock moved back to 1:37 remaining, which was enough time for the Bruins to capitalize on the second opportunity. So with 46 seconds remaining in the contest, junior forward McKinley Tennyson, Jr. took a Shea Travis pass and knocked it in for the stunning equalizer.
Starting over with new life, the Bruins won the game in the second overtime period. With one and a half minutes to play, Sasha Victorine found himself open near the goal and headed a shot that deflected off Northridge defender Aaron Benditson into the net for an own goal and a UCLA victory.
The Matadors made things difficult for the Bruins right from the get-go. Just 1:07 into the contest, Luis Castro blasted a hard shot that UCLA goalkeeper Nick Rimando had to dive to block it out of bounds. Nine minutes later, Rimando saved another hard shot, this one by Arroyo. However, he was unable to stop Arroyo's second attempt, which hit the top of the crossbar and went down into the net for the game's first score.
Northridge goalkeeper Christian Perez almost single-handedly preserved his team's 1-0 lead, making seven saves in the second half alone and a school-record 14 overall. UCLA had several chances to equalize - Tennyson had three shots at close range in a three minute span late in the second half before finally breaking through with the tying goal.
In the overtime period, UCLA had a goal nullified by an offsides plus four shots saved. Rimando himself made a spectacular save three minutes into the second overtime, stopping Michael Preis on a one-on-one opportunity for one of his five saves.
UCLA (8-1-0 overall, 1-0-0 in the MPSF) amassed an amazing 40 shots and 16 shots on goal. Northridge (6-5-0, 0-1-0) totaled 14 shots, six of which were on goal. The teams played in front of a crowd of 3,217, the fourth-largest crowd in Northridge history.
The Bruins will next face UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Oct. 10 in an MPSF contest at UCLA's North Athletic Field at 12:00 pm.
