Charlotte, NC - The third-ranked UCLA men's soccer team ended the 1999 season with a 3-2 four-overtime loss to second-seeded and defending champion Indiana in the NCAA semifinals at Ericsson Stadium.

UCLA made an almost miraculous comeback to even get into the overtime sessions. Down 2-0 with less than 15 minutes to play, the Bruins cut the lead in half with a goal at 76:33 by senior defender Steve Shak. Freshman defender Scot Thompson, equalized about six minutes later, taking a pass from M.A.C. Award-winner Sasha Victorine and heading it in to the back post.

The two teams traded opportunities in the four overtime periods. In the first overtime period, an Aleksey Korol point-blank shot from 16 yards out was saved by Bruin keeper Nick Rimando, who scampered up to block the shot. Rimando made two more big saves in the second overtime to keep the score even. UCLA had a golden opportunity to win the game in the 135th minute when redshirt freshman Tim Pierce sent a shot that hit the post.

Indiana's Ryan Mack ended the marathon at 141:24 by sending a left-footed shot from just outside the box past a diving Rimando into the net.

UCLA outshot Indiana 20-18. Rimando made a career-high tying six saves, while Hoosier keeper T.J. Hannig had three.

The Hoosier win ended a UCLA three-game winning streak against Indiana and finished the Bruins' season at 19-3. Indiana (20-3) will face Santa Clara (16-3-3), a 2-1 4ot-winner over Connecticut, in the national championship game.
