PULLMAN, Wash. -- The 30th-ranked Washington State women's tennis team lost a close first-time home match against No. 4 UCLA 5-4 at the Stadium Way Tennis Center Sunday.

Freshman Sarah Burrows charged up the Cougars with an early 6-3, 6-4 win against UCLA's Rochelle Raiss. The native of Lakewood, Colo., has been on fire in the last seven matches compiling a 4-3 record at No. 6 singles.

Junior Melissa Pine (Newfoundland, Canada) defeated the Bruins' Petya Marinova 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 to put the Cougars on the board with an additional win in singles.

Doubles competition sealed the win for the Bruins, after the No. 6 doubles team of Annica Cooper and Amanda Basica defeated the No. 50 team of Erica Perkins (Seattle, Wash.) and Burrows 8-4.

However, the Cougars claimed the remaining doubles matches with Andrea Reisz (Pecs, Hungary) and Patrycja Gajdzik (Szczecin, Poland) defeating Raiss and Schmidt 9-7 and Tamara Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) and Pine defeating Freudenberg and Marinova 9-7.

"It was very close," WSU coach Cari Groce said. "I am very pleased with the team effort and I think this match shows how close we are to becoming a top team."

The Cougars (7-10) host Idaho and rival Washington Thursday, April 15 and Saturday, April 17 in Pullman for Mom's Weekend festivities.

"With the two teams coming in this week, we would like to finish off strong and finish the season on a high note," Groce said.
