LOS ANGELES - The outcome came down to the final doubles match as the No. 10 ranked UCLA women's tennis team defeated the 27th-ranked University of Miami, 5- 4, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center today. The victory improves UCLA's record to 13-3 overall, while Miami slipped to 9-7 on the season.

Four singles matches went three sets and another went to a tiebreaker in both of the first two as today's match proved to be as close as it gets. UCLA claimed wins on the odd numbered courts and Miami took the even ones as the teams split singles play down the middle. Miami notched the first point of the afternoon as senior Sophie Cortina claimed the only straight-set match of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over UCLA rookie Rochelle Raiss on court No. 6. UCLA claimed the next three matches to take the lead.

Bruin senior Brandi Freudenberg lost the first set 3-6, but rebounded to claim the next two 6-2, 6-2 for the win over Miami freshman Marcy Hora on court No. 3. Seconds later, No. 34 ranked UCLA junior Annica Cooper completed a 7-6, 7-6 double tiebreak win on court No. 1, upsetting No. 13 ranked Liodmila Skavronskaia. This victory avenged Cooper's three-set loss to Skavronskaia in the NCAA Singles Championships last year. The Bruins notched their final singles point on court No. 5 where freshman Petya Marinova split sets with Miami sophomore Alanna Broderick 6-3, 3-6 and battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the third to win the decisive set 6-4.

It was Miami who rallied back on the remaining two courts to tie the match at three all after singles. On court No. 4, Miami junior Eva Jimenez rallied to defeat UCLA junior Elizabeth Schmidt 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. The final singles match saw Miami sophomore Katia Bogomolova recover from a 2-6 loss in the first to claim the match 6-4, 6-4 over UCLA junior Amanda Basica on court No. 2.

In doubles play, UCLA jumped out to an early lead on court No. 1, but Miami did the same on No. 2 putting the pressure on court No. 3 from the outset. Miami took a brief lead when the team of Broderick and Bogomolova defeated the UCLA team of Raiss and Schmidt 8-3 in the No. 2 slot. UCLA tied the score at four all when the No. 8 ranked duo of Basica and Cooper defeated Jimenez and Skavronskaia 8-2 on court No. 1. The score was 5-4 when all eyes turned to court No. 3 for the final match. UCLA's team of Freudenberg and Marinova did not relinquish another game and claimed the decisive victory 8-4 over Cortina and Hora.

The Bruins continue the brief homestand hosting local rival Pepperdine tomorrow (Friday, March 19) at 1:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Please note this match was originally scheduled to be played at Pepperdine, but was switched with the earlier meeting on Feb. 2.
