LOS ANGELES - The No. 10 ranked UCLA women's tennis team defeated the 7th-ranked College of William & Mary, 5-1, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center today. With the match wrapped up after singles play, doubles matches were not contested. The victory improves UCLA's record to 9-3 overall, while W&M slipped to 12-3 on the season.

The UCLA lineup looked a little different today as usual No. 1 player Cristina Popescu continues to be sidelined with an ailing shoulder. In addition both of the Bruins who posted wins against Texas played a notch higher today. Three Bruins cruised to straight set wins while two others used three sets to claim victories. UCLA's only loss came in the No. 4 position, where Brandi Freudenberg fell 7-5 in the third to W&M's No. 60 ranked Tari Ann Toro after the two seniors split sets 6-3, 2-6. In the No. 1 position, UCLA's No. 34 ranked Annica Cooper registered a 6-1, 6-2 win over W&M's No. 41 ranked Carolijn van Rossum in a battle between juniors. UCLA junior Katia Roubanova moved up to the No. 3 slot to register a 6-3, 6-2 win over W&M freshman Delphine Troch. Also posting a straight-set win, was UCLA rookie Petya Marinova who won 6-2, 6-0 over Elizabeth O on court No. 6.

Playing in the No. 5 position, UCLA junior Elizabeth Schmidt claimed a first-set tiebreaker, but dropped the second, 2-6, before regrouping for a 6-1 win in the third over W&M sophomore Lindsay Sullivan. Bruin junior Amanda Basica came back from a 3-6 first-set loss to defeat Tribe sophomore Carlijn Buis 7-6, 6-2 on court No. 2. Next up, the Bruins travel to the desert to face Arizona State and Arizona this weekend.
