LOS ANGELES - UCLA first baseman/catcher Julie Marshall belted a grand slam in game one and then added a three-run home run in game two, as the No. 1 ranked UCLA softball team swept past No. 7 Arizona State 8-0 and 6-1, in a doubleheader Monday at UCLA's Easton Softball Stadium. With the two victories, UCLA improves to 40-1 overall and 9-1 in Pac-10 competition. ASU falls to 31-13 overall and 2-8 in Pac-10 play.
Marshall, who finished the day 2-for-6 with seven RBI, put the Bruins up 5-0 in game one, with her 11th home run of the season, a first-inning grand-slam off ASU starter Erica Beach. The Bruins would add three more runs in the first inning, including one off a bases loaded intentional walk to UCLA catcher Stacey Nuveman. With the UCLA victory, Bruin starter Courtney Dale improved to 20-0 on the season, giving up just three hits and no runs in the five-inning contest. She also blasted her third home run of the season in UCLA's eight-run first inning.
In game two, Marshall broke open a 1-0 UCLA lead in the bottom of the fifth, belting her second home run of the day, this time off ASU starter Kirsten Voak. UCLA right fielder Lupe Brambila, following a sixth-inning Crissy Buck leadoff walk, belted her first home run of the season to put the Bruins up 6-0. Arizona State avoided the shutout, managing a run in the top of the seventh off a Missy Hixon RBI-single. UCLA's game-two starter Amanda Freed improved to 17-1 on the season, striking out eight and allowing just five hits in seven-complete innings of work. Along with her excellent performance on the mound in game two, Freed was perfect at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a double.
Nuveman, in addition to her intentional walk with the bases loaded in game one, was intentionally walked in all seven of her at bats on the afternoon. Already UCLA's career home run leader with 39, she stands just one shy of tying her own single-season UCLA home run record of 20. In addition, she had both game-winning hits in UCLA's two victories over No. 2 Arizona on Saturday.
Second baseman Lyndsey Klein was 3-for-3 in game one with a run scored and her Pac-10 leading 15th double of the season.
Both Jennifer Langenhuizen and Erin Wardein notched a hit in each contest for the Sun Devils. Voak, ASU's game-two starter, held the Bruins to just one run through the first four innings, finishing the game with seven strikeouts.
The Bruins will be in action again this week as they host Loyola Marymount, this Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at UCLA's Easton Softball Stadium, prior to heading to Oregon this weekend for Pac-10 doubleheaders with Oregon and Oregon State.
