Men's Tennis Teams Fall to Familiar Foes

May 22, 1999ATHENS, GA - The No. 1 UCLA Bruins defeated the No. 54 Virginia Tech Hokies 4-1 today at the 1999 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships at Henry Field Stadium in Athens, Georgia. With the win UCLA improves to 24-2 overall, while Virginia Tech ends its season with a 19-6 record.

The Bruins showed their depth today, with two of their wins in singles play coming from the bottom half of the line-up. After clinching the lone point in doubles play, UCLA continued its success in singles, winning the first set on all but one court. All three of UCLA's wins in singles came in straight sets. Yet the Hokies kept fighting back, winning on court No. 3, leading on court No. 1 in the third set and forcing a tie-breaker in the second set on court No. 6.

UCLA started the day on a positive note, claiming the lone point awarded for doubles play. The Bruins' No. 7 ranked team of Jason Cook and Brandon Kramer finished first, defeating the Virginia Tech duo of Davor Dupljak and Grant Semon, 8-2 on court No. 2. UCLA clinched the doubles point when the No. 6 team in the nation - Jean-Noel Grinda and Jong-Min Lee - handed Virginia Tech's No. 35 team of Aaron and Adam Marchetti an 8-5 defeat on court No. 1 to record their ninth-straight win. Court No. 3 was tied at 7 when the match was suspended.

Freshman sensation Zack Fleishman recorded UCLA's first point in singles play, defeating Virginia Tech's No. 45 Adam Marchetti 6-1, 6-4 on court No. 2. The Bruins went up 3-0 after junior Lee defeated Davor Dupljak 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 4. The Hokies battled back with a win on court No. 3, as Niels Oggesen defeated UCLA's No. 81 Cook 7-6(5), 6-2. The match was clinched for the Bruins on court No. 5 when Kramer came back from being down 3-0 in the second set to win 6-3, 6-4 against Eddie Terzimehic. Virginia Tech's No. 17 Aaron Marchetti was leading UCLA's No. 7 Grinda in the third set on court No. 1 before the match was suspended. After winning the first set, UCLA's Marcin Rozpedski was in a tie-breaker with Jay Bruner on court No. 6 before their match was suspended.

UCLA advances to the quarterfinals for the 11th straight year and for the 22nd time in the 23 years of the team format. The Bruins will next face No. 8 seed Florida (20-5), with play beginning at 2 pm Sunday, May 23 at Henry Field Stadium. UCLA is 5-0 against Florida with its last win coming on Feb. 21, 1998.
