Men's Tennis Wins Big Ten Opener at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. โ Emon van Loben Sels delivered the deciding win as UCLA men's tennis beat Indiana 4-2 in the teams' Big Ten Conference opener at IU Tennis Center. Indiana claimed the doubles point and led 2-1 in the contest.
Also prevailing in singles play for the Bruins (7-3, 1-0 Big Ten) were Cassius Chinlund, Rudy Quan and Aadarsh Tripathi. Aidan Atwood was victorious in singles play for the Hoosiers (6-4, 0-1).
Braeden Gelletich/Facundo Yunis got Indiana off on the right foot in doubles play, beating Quan/Bengt Reinhard 6-2 on Court 3. Then, with the Court 1 match in a tiebreaker, No. 57 Michael Andre/Matteo Antonescu of the Hoosiers took down van Loben Sels/Gianluca Ballotta 6-4 on the second court. The loss was the UCLA pair's first in six finished contests.
The Bruins claimed five singles first sets to begin their comeback. Tripathi pulled his team even, making the most of his first opportunity on Court 4 this season. The senior bested Andre 6-4, 6-2.
Indiana's lone singles first set soon became its only singles win, as Atwood dealt Bengt Reinhard a 6-4, 6-4 defeat on Court 6. UCLA quickly recovered, though, with Chinlund providing another equalizer. His sixth victory in eight dual decisions was a 7-5, 6-2 result over Braeden Gelletich on Court 5.
No. 104 Quan gave the Bruins their first lead with his 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 showing opposite Jip van Assendelft on Court 2. Quan has won six straight singles match and is 7-1 in dual play and 12-2 overall.
No. 35 van Loben Sels's team-high third clinching victory โ and eighth of his career โ came by way of a 7-6(3), 6-2 display versus Yunis on Court 3. The top-court matchup between No. 57 Spencer Johnson of UCLA and the Hoosiers' Sam Landau was abandoned in its third set.
