LOS ANGELES - The No. 1 ranked UCLA men's tennis team defeated the University of Oregon, 6-1, in a Pac-10 Conference match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center today. With the victory, UCLA improves to 19-1 overall, 5-1 in Pac-10 play, while Oregon fell to 7-12 overall and 0-5 in league action.
The Bruins suffered a rare loss of the doubles point, but recovered to sweep singles play en route to today's victory. UCLA's No. 20 ranked doubles team of Jean-Noel Grinda/Jong-Min Lee was the first to finish posting a solid 8-3 win over Oregon's team of David Becker/Thomas Schneiter on court No. 2. Oregon pulled even with an 8-6 win by Miguel Arriaga/Carlos Navarro over UCLA's team of Marcin Rozpedski/Chris Sands in the No. 3 position. The momentum on court No. 1 shifted dramatically as Oregon's team of Guillermo Carter/Bertrand Devillers trailed UCLA's Jason Cook/Brandon Kramer 3-6, but rallied to win the match, 9-7, and subsequently claim the doubles point for the Ducks.
In singles play, UCLA jumped out to an early lead by taking the first set on five courts. Four of those matches finished in straight sets, while Oregon forced a third on the other. The Bruins also came back to claim the final match in three sets to complete a singles sweep. The four straight-set matches finished within moments of each other, with Rozpedski wrapping things up first on court No. 6 where he tied the match at one point each by defeating Arriaga 6- 2, 6-3. Lee defeated Navarro 6-1, 6-0 on court No. 4 to give the Bruins the lead. On court No. 2, Cook defeated Carter 6-3, 6-2, while Grinda downed Schneiter 6-2, 6-2 in the top-slot.
The longer matches of the day saw the Bruins take different paths to a pair of three-set wins. UCLA's Kramer claimed the first set on court No. 5, 6-3. However, Oregon's Hamdan came back strong with an 0-6 win in the second forcing Kramer to rally for a 6-2 win in the third. On court No. 3, UCLA's Zack Fleishman battled back from a 3-6 loss in the first to claim the match 6-2, 6-0 in the final match to finish.
UCLA concludes the home portion of its regular-season schedule tomorrow (Saturday, April 10) hosting the University of Washington at Noon at the LATC. Admission to all UCLA regular-season home matches is FREE.
