LOS ANGELES - The UCLA men's tennis team, tied for No. 5 in the national rankings, opened the season in tremendous fashion by sweeping No. 22 ranked Fresno State, 7-0, today at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Today's match was the season opener for both teams.
In doubles play, Fresno State's team of David Mullins and Kevin Vieira gave the Bulldogs their biggest highlight of the day with an 8-3 win over UCLA's duo of Zack Fleishman and Noah Newman on court No. 3. However, UCLA claimed the doubles point with victories on the other two courts.
The Bruins did not relinquish even a set in singles play as all six UCLA players claimed straight set victories. The closest match of the day came on court No. 2 where UCLA's No. 66 ranked freshman Zack Fleishman made his collegiate dual-match debut with a 6-2, 7-6 win over FSU's No. 60 ranked senior Rob Cheyne. In the top position UCLA sophomore All-American Jean-Noel Grinda defeated No. 40 ranked sophomore Peter Luczak 6-2, 6-0. On court No. 3 the Bruins only senior Jason Cook defeated FSU rookie Nick Fustar 6-3, 6-0.
