Woods' Homer in Ninth Lifts UW Over UCLA, 8-6

Kyle Woods' two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth gave the Washington baseball team an 8-6 win over UCLA in a Pac-10 Conference game Saturday at Husky Ballpark. The win was the first ever in 17 tries for the Huskies against the Bruins.

Woods, whose error in left field in the top of the ninth allowed UCLA to tie the game at 5-5, had been slumping, batting only .229 with one home run entering the game. After the Bruins had scored a sixth run in the top of the ninth, Woods came up after sophomore Tyson Boston had singled to score Bryan Williamson with the tying run. The homer came off of UCLA closer Bobby Roe, who threw only one pitch in the game.

In the top of the inning, UCLA plated three runs off of Husky closer Matt Massingale (1-1), who recorded the win. With two out and runners at the corners, Brian Baron sliced a ball to left that scored one run to make it 5-4 UW, but Woods let the ball get by him, allowing Michael Hymes to score all the way from first base. Adam Berry singled to score pinch runner Nick Lyon with the go-ahead run.

UCLA starter Jon Brandt (5-3) threw eight and one-third innings in the loss. UW ace Jeff Heaverlo left the game with a 5-3 lead and got no decision. The junior righty worked seven innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and six strikeouts.

Husky left fielder Daniel Jahn, in only his second career start, went 3-for-3 with an RBI and freshman shortstop Richard Hall finished 1-for-3 with three runs batted in. UCLA got two hits and two RBI from left fielder Bill Scott and two hits each from Jack Santora and Jason Green.

Washington improved to 13-8 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-10 while UCLA fell to 15-18 and 1-3. UCLA had beaten the UW in all of 16 prior meetings, though the two teams had faced each other only three times since 1971.

Washington and UCLA continue the three-game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and Monday at 2:00 p.m.
