BERKELEY, Calif. - There will be no dramatic sweep of the Los Angeles school this weekend for the California men's tennis team, as the No. 1-ranked UCLA Bruins ran their winning streak to 18 straignt with a 6-1 Pacific-10 Conference dual match victory over the Golden Bears at the Hellman Tennis Center, Friday afternoon.
UCLA, which improved to 21-1 (7-1 Pac-10) with the win, set the tone early by taking the doubles point behind victories at all three positions. Marcin Rozpedski and Chris Sands got things rolling for the Bruins with an 8-3 win over Chris Lewis and David Tzou at No. 3. Jean-Noel Grinda and Jong Min Lee then clinched the point for UCLA, knocking off the Bear pair of Erik Dmytruk and Scott Kintz, 8-4, at No. 2. Jason Cook and Brandon Kramer closed out the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Cal's Adrian Barnes and Chris Santoso in the top spot.
Things didn't get much better for Cal, 7-11 (2-3 Pac-10), in singles as Hiro Nakamura, playing in the No. 6 slot, posted Cal's only point of the afternoon with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Chris Sands. Cal had a chance to pick up a second point at No. 2, as Dmytruk, who was making his career debut in that position, took Cook to the limit before falling 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. UCLA closed out the other four singles contests in straight sets.
