LOS ANGELES - The No. 1 ranked UCLA softball team maintained its perfect record Tuesday, knocking off the University of San Diego 7-0 and 2-1 in a doubleheader at UCLA's Easton Softball Stadium. With the sweep, UCLA takes a 29-0 record into Pac-10 competition, which begins at home on Mar. 27 against Cal. With the two losses, USD falls to 19-7 overall.
Game one was all UCLA as catcher Stacey Nuveman broke open the game in the fourth inning, belting her team-leading 16th home run of the season, a two-run shot off Torero pitcher Misty Velke that put the Bruins up 3-0. Two batters later, Bruin pitcher Courtney Dale helped her own cause, knocking out a two-run homer, giving UCLA a 5-0 lead. The Bruins would score two more in the sixth inning and hold USD scoreless in the top of the seventh to take the game-one victory. With the win, Dale improved her record to 13-0 on the season, allowing just two hits and no walks, while striking out nine Torero batters.
Game two was much closer as both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. In that inning, Lyndsey Klein broke the scoreless tie, belting a two-out, two-RBI single to give UCLA the lead heading into the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, the Toreros staged a rally as Trisha Tucker registered an RBI-double, cutting the Bruin lead to just one. However, with two outs, USD's next batter Nicky Geis popped up to second base to end the game.
UCLA's game-two pitcher Amanda Freed improved to 13-0 with the victory, striking out eight and allowing five hits and just one earned run. UCLA's top performer on the afternoon was Julie Adams, who was 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the two Bruin victories.
The Toreros were led by game-two pitcher Amy Lopez, who held UCLA scoreless through five innings, allowing six hits and no earned runs, while striking out four Bruin batters. Center fielder Katy Morrison registered a hit in each contest for the Toreros.
The Bruin's next action of the season will be their 1999 Pac-10 opener against Cal on Saturday, March 27 at 11:00 a.m. Also, on that Sunday, UCLA will host Stanford in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
