Sept. 10, 1999
Miami, FL - The top-ranked UCLA men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 1999 season, dropping a 1-0 double overtime decision to Florida International at the FIU Classic in Miami, FL.
FIU scored the game-winner at 118:25 when freshman Russell Vreeland received a through pass from Eddie Testa and beat UCLA goalkeeper Nick Rimando one-on-one.
Testa, who had entered the match for the first time just moments before, received the ball near midfield and sent a pass through the UCLA defense that hit Vreeland in full stride down the near side. Vreeland faked right, moving Rimando out of position, then scored the goal to the far post during the second sudden-death overtime.
UCLA appeared to have won the match in the 19th minute of overtime after a goal by Sasha Victorine, but the play was called offsides and the goal nullified.
UCLA outshot the Golden Panthers 13-10, but FIU goalie Wally Crittenden came up with a career-high nine saves during his first career shutout. Rimando tied his career-high with six saves.
The Bruins (2-1) will next play Butler (0-3) on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 12:00 pm ET. Butler lost the first game of the Classic 2-0 to Columbia. Columbia and FIU will play for the Classic championship Sunday afternoon at 3:00.
