WESTWOOD, Calif. -- The top-ranked UCLA men's tennis team swept the No. 49 UNLV Rebels 7-0 today at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With today's win, UCLA now owns an undefeated 3-0 series record against UNLV. The Bruins' record improves to 2-0, while the Rebels fall to 0-1.
UCLA started the day off on a good note by sweeping the doubles competition and claiming the lone point awarded for doubles play. The UCLA tandem of Brandon Kramer and Erfan Djahangiri cruised to an 8-1 win over UNLV's Tyler Roberts and Robbie Parlade on court No. 3. Moments later, UCLA claimed the doubles point when Chris Sands and Lassi Ketola sealed an 8-2 victory over Danny Erez and Gregor Skorin on court No. 2. Court No. 1 proved to be the most exciting, as the UCLA duo of Jong-Min Lee and Jean-Julien Rojer and the UNLV team of Vladimir Pavicevic and Nenad Zivcovic tied a total of five times before UCLA forged ahead from a 6-6 tie to claim an 8-6 win.
In singles action, UCLA took a commanding lead, claiming the first set in five courts and going on to win each of those matches in straight sets. Court No. 2 was first to finish, as UCLA's Kramer sailed past Zivkovic 6-0, 6-0. Also quick to finish was court No. 6, where UCLA's Rojer handed Parlade a 6-3, 6-0 loss. Next to finish was Sands, who defeated Roberts 6-1, 6-0 on court No. 4 to give UCLA the victory. Not soon after teammate Sands wrapped up his match, UCLA's Ketola registered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Erez on court No. 3. Last to finish a straight set victory was Lee, who posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Pavicevic on court No. 1 to put the Bruins ahead 6-0.
The Bruins' toughest competition came in the No. 5 position, the only court to go into three sets, where UNLV's Skorin claimed the first set over Djahangiri 6-3 and then fell 0-6, 3-6.
Later this week, UCLA will be holding its annual Bruin Raqueteer Day on Saturday, January 22 at 9 am at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins continue their long homestand next week when they meet Fresno State on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 1:30 pm.
