Duncan Oughton's penalty kick with 1:07 remaining in the final sudden victory overtime period Thursday night gave Cal State Fullerton a 3-2 non-conference men's soccer win over UCLA.
The win improved the Titans' record to 12-4-1 while the Bruins lost their fourth in a row to fall to 9-5. UCLA hadn't lost four in a row since 1979. It also was UCLA's fourth loss in a row in Titan Stadium, but the Bruins still hold a 24-7-2 edge in the all-time series.
Fullerton's David Dischner was taken down in the penalty box by Tony Lawson to give the penalty kick to Oughton, who also scored the first Fullerton goal early in the second half.
UCLA took a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by Leonard Griffin, his second of the year, and McKinley Tennyson Jr., his team-leading 13th of the year. Shaun Tsakiris assisted on both to move into a tie for fifth place in UCLA's career assist list with 30. Ricky Melendez scored six minutes after Oughton to earn Fullerton a 2-2 tie with 37 minutes remaining.
Tennyson created opportunities in both the second half (shot hit the left post) and first overtime period (wide left) but was just short each time.
Rain began falling on the crowd of 1,581 late in the first overtime period and continued throughout the match.
DJ Countess made seven saves for the Bruins. Sean Rockwell made five for Fullerton but had to leave the game eight minutes into the first overtime period when he was kicked in the right foot. Josh Saunders, who hadn't played since Sept. 29, played the final 21 minutes.
Fullerton plays again Tuesday with a home game against Concordia. UCLA plays Portland Saturday in the Pacific Soccer Challenge in Drake Stadium in Westwood.
