LOS ANGELES - The second-ranked UCLA softball team swept a Thursday doubleheader against Cal State Northridge with game scores of 4-0 and 1-0. With the victories, the Bruins improve to 16-3 on the season while the Matadors fall to 3-8-1.
In game one, all four of UCLA's runs were scored on home runs, as senior second baseman Lyndsey Klein hit a two-run home run to left field in the fourth inning, and Klein and senior Julie Marshall hit back-to-back solo shots in the sixth inning. Courtney Dale pitched a three-hit shutout to earn her seventh win of the season.
The nightcap saw junior Stephanie Swenson start her second game of the season. Swenson held the Matadors to just two hits in the game, but the Bruin bats were quiet as well. UCLA's best scoring chance came in the second inning when Julie Adams singled to shortstop, Courtney Dale walked and Tairia Mims singled to load the bases. That was as far as the Bruins got, however, as Amanda Freed was out on a caught foul ball and Lupe Brambila struck out to end the inning.
The next Bruin baserunner didn't appear until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Courtney Dale reached on an error by Northridge first baseman Jamie Moore. Crissy Buck pinch ran for Dale, stole second base, was sacrificed to third by Toria Auelua, and was singled home on a hit up the middle by Mims. Swenson pitched a two-hit shutout to go 2-0 on the season.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday at Easton Stadium, when the Bruins play host to a doubleheader against No. 5 Fresno State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
