WESTWOOD, Calif. - Down 4-2 after singles play, No. 9 UCLA couldn't manage a much needed doubles sweep, as No. 7 ASU took a 6-3 road victory over the Bruins at the Los Angeles Tennis Center Friday.
ASU's tandem of Karin Palme and Kerry Giardino won the clinching match at No. 3 doubles, defeating UCLA's Petya Marinova/Cristina Popescu 8-6.
Both teams were playing without their No. 1 players as UCLA's Sara Walker, ranked No. 18 in the nation, was home in El Paso, Tex., dealing with a family matter and ASU's Allison Bradshaw, ranked 13th in the latest ITA rankings, is sidelined with an injury.
With the loss, UCLA falls to 8-4 on the season and ASU improves to 10-2.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow as they host No. 26 Arizona at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at Noon.
