UCLA Men's Tennis Defeats Oregon, 6-1

EUGENE, Ore. - Despite playing some solid tennis, the Oregon Ducks were defeated by the UCLA Bruins, 6-1 on Friday at Eugene Swim and Tennis Club. The Bruins swept three tough doubles matches but were stopped short of a complete shutout by Oregon's Guillermo Carter, who upset the Bruins' Jong-Min Lee, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 at the No. 1 singles position.
In singles, Oregon senior Joaquin Hamdan won his first set 6-3, but was unable to pull away with the victory, falling to UCLA's Erfan Djahangiri, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 5. Teammate Thomas Schneiter also picked up a first set win, but was defeated by Brandon Kramer of the Bruins, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.
In doubles, the Ducks' tandem of Schneiter and freshman Oded Teig battled UCLA's Jean-Noel Grinda and Jean-Julien Rojer, but came up just short as the Bruins won the match 9-7. At No. 3, Oregon's duo of Hamdan and junior David Becker also fought hard, but were defeated by UCLA's Travis Rettenmaier and Lassi Ketola, 8-6
"We played some good tennis today," said Oregon head coach Chris Russell. "But they were tough, and definitely ready to play against us. They will make you earn it, and they won't roll over. I don't think we started doubles the way we wanted to, and the doubles point is huge for us. When we've won the doubles, we've done well. But, we've got to be able to bounce back, and come back strong tomorrow. If we do, we'll be right in the middle of that one."
The Bruins are now 18-3 on the season, while the Ducks fall to 11-7. UCLA returns to action Saturday when they face the Washington Cougars in Seattle beginning at noon.
