STANFORD, Calif. - Amanda Freed threw a one-hitter to lead No. 3 UCLA to a 8-0 win in five innings over No. 8 Stanford at the Stanford Softball Complex Sunday afternoon. The Bruins improve to 28-5 on the year and 3-0 in the Pac-10 while the Cardinal falls to 30-7, 1-4. Freed faced only one batter over the minimum, striking out five over five innings in improving to 13-2 on the year.

The Bruins scored two in the first inning to open up the game. Lyndsey Klein got a two-out single, then moved to second on a passed ball. She then scored on Julie Marshall's pop single to shallow left field. The Bruins then added a second run on three consecutive walks.

UCLA again struck with two out in the third. Julie Adams walked with two outs. Stanford's catcher tried to pick her off first base, but Adams reached second on a throwing error during the ensuing rundown. Tairia Mims then hit a grounder to short, reaching on an error when Adams screened Robin Walker from the ball as she ran by. Adams came around to score on the play. Toria Auelua then singled and advanced to second on the unsuccessful throw to third to make a play on Mims. Pinch hitter Casey Hiraiwa then grounded back to the pitcher, but the throw from freshman Tori Nyberg was over the head of sophomore Sarah Beeson at first, allowing two more runs to score. Then Lupe Brambila reached on another error allowing the fourth run of the inning to score.

The Bruins added two more in the fourth. Freed led off with a bunt single, then Natasha Watley singled, with Freed taking third. Watley stole second, then Klein and Marshall hit consecutive sacrifice flies to score both runs. Nyberg fell to 5-1 with the loss, allowing eight runs, four earned, on six hits and four walks. She struck out two.

No. 3 UCLA returns to action on Friday afternoon, taking the field in Eugene, Ore., for a single game against the Ducks before travelling to Corvallis, Ore., for a weekend series against Oregon State. Friday's game at Oregon and Saturday's game against the Beavers begin at 2:00 p.m., while Sunday's game is a 1 p.m. first pitch.
