WESTWOOD, Calif. -- The No. 2 UCLA men's tennis team shut out No. 35 California 7-0 Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, UCLA improves to 20-3 overall, while Bears drop to 12-9.

After losing the doubles point to the Bears in a Pac-10 matchup two weeks ago, the Bruins were quick to take their vengeance today, sweeping doubles play to claim the first point of the match. Court No. 2 was first to finish as UCLA's Jean-Julien Rojer and Jean-Noel Grinda bested Cal's Robert Kowalczyk and Ben Miles, who are ranked No. 52 in the nation, 8-3. Moments after, UCLA's tandem of Lassi Ketola and Travis Rettenmaier cruised to an 8-2 win over Cal's John Paul Fruttero and David Tzou on court No. 3. The Bruins completed the doubles sweep when Brandon Kramer and Jong-Min Lee, ranked No. 5 in the nation, avenged their 8-3 loss to No. 22 Erik Dmytruk and Scott Kintz earlier this month with an 8-4 victory on court No.1.

The afternoon continued in winning fashion, as the Bruins swept singles play, claiming straight set victories on courts No. 2 through six. The top position was the last to finish and the only court to go to three sets. Lee, ranked No. 36 in the nation, won the first set 6-4 over Fruttero. Fruttero came back in the second set to post a 6-3 win, but Lee finally prevailed, winning the third set 6-3.

The win marks UCLA's second over California this season. On April 8, the Bruins defeated the Bears 6-1 in Berkeley in a Pac-10 conference match. All-time, UCLA is 66-6 in the series against Cal.

The Bruins will have a chance to avenge their two season losses to top-ranked Stanford when they host the Cardinal tomorrow at noon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Earlier this season, then-No. 2 Stanford defeated then- No. 7 UCLA 4-3 on February 27 in the finals of the National Team Indoors, which was held in Louisville. On April 7, the Cardinal edged past UCLA once again, 4-3, in Palo Alto.
