Softball Defeats Long Beach State In NCAA Play

LOS ANGELES - UCLA used 11 hits to compile 10 runs on Friday afternoon to defeat Long Beach State, 10-4, in NCAA Tournament action at Easton Stadium on the UCLA campus. The Bruins now advance to a winners bracket game at 10 a.m. Saturday against the winner of Friday's Iowa vs. Florida State game. With the win, the Bruins improve to 41-11-1, while The Beach finishes its season with a 39-23 record.
The offense started in the top of the second inning when UCLA, the visiting team in this game, strung together four hits, including an RBI double by Courtney Dale, an RBI single by Amanda Freed and a bases-loaded walk to Julie Adams.
The Beach answered in the bottom of the frame, earning two runs on a two-out double with the bases loaded.
After Bruin first baseman Tairia Mims was hit by a Kristi Fox pitch, outfielder Crissy Buck smashed her third career home run into the scoreboard in left field. It was Buck's first home run of the season, and her second career postseason home run, as she homered in the ninth inning to end UCLA's first game of the 1999 Women's College World Series against DePaul.
Bruin starting pitcher Courtney Dale lasted 3-2/3 innings before allowing two unearned runs and loading the bases with two walks. Centerfielder Freed then moved in to pitch and got the final out of the inning as designated player Elizabeth Sanches struck out swinging, leaving the score 5-4 UCLA.
The score remained the same until the top of the sixth inning, when UCLA racked up five more runs on five hits to seal the win with a 10-4 score.
