OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Bill Scott paced a 15-hit attack and UCLA took advantage of five Oklahoma errors Sunday afternoon at the Southwestern Bell Bricktown Ball Park to claim an 11-3 win and earn a spot in next weekend's NCAA Baseball Super Regional.
Scott, voted to the all-tournament team as an outfielder, ripped four hits for the Bruins, who improved to 38-24 on the season. Oklahoma finishes at 41-23.
Ryan Carter (3-1) hurled eight strong innings for UCLA, giving up only four hits, walking three and striking out two. Jon Brandt pitched the final inning. OU starter Austin Mix (10-2) took the loss. He surrendered nine runs, only four of them earned, and 12 hits over seven innings. Brandon Hankins gave up two runs in the eighth and Jeff Wigington retired the Bruins in the ninth.
Oklahoma scored twice in the bottom of the first on singles by Jerome Godsey and Tommy Whiteman and a UCLA error, but the Bruins took advantage of three Oklahoma errors in the third, tallying six times and never looking back. Five UCLA players sparked the early uprising, including regional MVP Chase Utley's triple that scored one and tied the score at 2-2. That was the last time the Bruins would be close to OU.
Godsey's bunt scored an Oklahoma run in the fifth, but UCLA countered in the seventh when Scott and Forrest Johnson singled and came around to score. The Bruins got two more in the eighth on three hits: a single by Atkins, Scott's double and Charles Merricks' base hit.
UCLA will meet either Louisiana State or Louisiana-Monroe in next week's Super Regional, with the winner advancing to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
