Bloomington, Ind. - There will be a new No. 1 after the first week of play in the 2000 men's soccer season, as third-ranked UCLA handed top-ranked and defending NCAA champs Indiana its second consecutive loss with a 2-1 victory at the Indiana adidas Classic.
Indianapolis native McKinley Tennyson Jr. continued his success against the Hoosiers, scoring in the 25th minute for the game's first goal. Tennyson dribbled all the way from the center circle to the goal area and launched a shot to the right post for his first goal of the year and his third in four career games against Indiana.
In the 42nd minute, sophomore Scot Thompson scored for the second time this year, heading in a Shaun Tsakiris corner kick.
Indiana had a prime opportunity to score in the second half when it was awarded a penalty kick. However, freshman goalkeeper DJ Countess dove to his right to save Ryan Mack's shot and knock it out of bounds, one of eight saves in the game. The Hoosiers did get on the board in the 66th minute on a Pat Noonan goal but could not equalize.
"It isn't often I miss a penalty kick," Mack said. "I thought I made a good shot but it was an incredible save. DJ had a great game. He is an impressive freshman."
Countess earned tournament Defensive MVP honors, while Tsakiris and fellow seniors Ryan Lee and Caleb Westbay were All-Tournament selections.
UCLA tied two Classic records this weekend. Its five goals against Butler tied a single-game mark held by Maryland in 1999 and Indiana in 1991. The Bruins' seven goals in the tournament tied a record set three other times.
The Bruins, which defeated Butler 5-0 Friday night, are expected to move into the No. 1 spot in the NSCAA rankings with a 2-0 record. Both teams ahead of UCLA in the rankings lost Friday. On top of losing to the Bruins Saturday, No. 1 Indiana lost to Portland Friday, 3-0, and No. 2 Santa Clara fell, 2-1 in overtime, to Sacramento State Friday. In addition, Duke, which is ranked first in Soccer America's pre-season poll, lost 1-0 to St. John's, and Connecticut, which ranks second in the Soccer America poll, lost 2-1 in overtime to Wake Forest.
UCLA returns home on Wednesday, Sept. 6 to face San Diego State at 7:30 pm on Spaulding Field.
