LOS ANGELES -Defending NCAA champion UCLA defeated 2000 NCAA runner-up Utah, 197.5-195.7, in front of 3,749 in Pauley Pavilion.
UCLA senior Mohini Bhardwaj (Cincinnati, OH) scored her second perfect 10 of the season on the floor exercise en route to capturing the all-around title with a career-high tying 39.725. Bhardwaj also tied the Pauley Pavilion records for floor and all-around and shared first-place honors on beam with Utah's Shannon Bowles with a career-high tying 9.925.
Bruin freshman Jamie Dantzscher (San Dimas, CA) won bars with a near-perfect 9.975 and remains undefeated on the season on this event. Sophomore Onnie Willis (Tacoma, WA) tied for first on vault with Utah's Veronique Leclerc, scoring 9.9.
Utah led after one rotation, 49.25-49.2, but UCLA took over the lead in the second after a 49.55 bars score, compared to Utah's 48.7 on vault. The Bruins maintained a six-tenths of a point lead heading into the final rotation and pulled away with a team total of 49.6 on floor. UCLA was led by Bhardwaj's 10 and also received scores of 9.95 from freshman Yvonne Tousek (Cambridge, ON) and 9.925s from 2000 U.S. Olympians Dantzscher and Kristen Maloney (Pen Argyl, PA). Utah, meanwhile, struggled on beam and scored 48.4 to fall behind by the final margin of 1.8 points.
Bhardwaj and Maloney (39.475) placed 1-2, respectively, in the all-around. Utah's Deidra Graham was third with a 39.3.
The Bruins' team score of 197.5 is the highest in the nation this year, surpassing two other UCLA scores. The total also ranks fifth on UCLA's all-time list.
UCLA runs its record to 5-0 on the year. Utah drops to 2-1. The win is UCLA's first ever over Utah in a regular-season meet.
