Los Angeles -- The UCLA women's tennis team came just short in attempting to pull off its biggest upset of the season Sunday, falling to No. 17 Pepperdine, 4-3 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

UCLA's doubles tandem of Lauren Fisher and Petya Marinova, ranked 20th in the latest ITA doubles rankings, got things started for Bruins, defeating Pepperdine's Monika Horvath/Paola Palencia, 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. The Waves, however, claimed the doubles point with victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions.

In singles, Fisher, Marinova and Mariko Fritz-Krockow all notched victories, however, it wasn't enough as the Waves managed to win three singles matches of their own to pull out the slim, 4-3 victory.

Both teams were playing without their No. 1 players Sunday as UCLA's Sara Walker and Pepperdine's Ipek Senoglu are both sidelined with injuries.

With the loss, UCLA falls to 5-12 on the year while Pepperdine improves to 14-7.

The Bruins will be on the road the next two weeks taking on the Bay Area schools this weekend and the Washington schools the following week. UCLA is gearing up for a meeting with top-ranked Stanford this Friday up North.
