Los Angeles -- Catherine Hawley defeated Cal's Christina Fusano, 7-6(5), 6-4 at No. 2 singles, lifting the UCLA women's tennis team to a 4-3 upset victory over the No. 9 Golden Bears at the Los Angeles Tennis Center Friday. With the win, UCLA snaps its six-match losing streak and improves to 6-16 overall and 3-3 in Pac-10 play. Cal drops to 14-5 overall and 4-4 in conference action.

The Bruins started the afternoon strong, winning two of three doubles matches to take the one point awarded for doubles play. Lauren Fisher and Petya Marinova won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles and Mariko Fritz-Krockow teamed with Sara Walker, cruising to an 8-0 victory in the No. 2 slot.

With a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, the Bruins needed to win just three of six singles matches to pull off the upset. UCLA did just that, receiving victories from Walker, Fisher and eventually Hawley to clinch the 4-3 upset win.

Friday's win avenges a 5-2 loss to the Golden Bears back on April 7 in Berkeley.

The Bruins return to the courts tomorrow, hosting top-ranked and undefeated Stanford at the LATC beginning at Noon.
