April 8, 2001

UCLA's quest to defend its national championship will begin Thursday, Apr. 19 at 1:00 pm local time in the preliminary round of the NCAA Gymnastics Championships in Athens, GA. The Bruins will compete against Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma and Oregon State with three berths in the Super Six Team Finals at stake.

In a blind draw conducted by the NCAA, UCLA was chosen to begin the meet on a bye before floor. The Bruins received a somewhat similar draw at the NCAA West Regionals Apr. 7, starting the meet on the floor exercise and eventually winning the regional championship with a final team score of 197.775. Oklahoma will begin the meet on vault, Florida is on a bye before bars, Michigan starts on bars, Oregon State is on beam, and Alabama begins on floor.

Competing in the evening session at 7:00 pm will be Arizona State, Denver, Georgia, Nebraska, Stanford and Utah. The top three teams from each session will advance to the Super Six Team Finals, which will be held Friday, Apr. 20 at 7:00 pm. UCLA and Georgia are the only two teams who have qualified to each Super Six.

In addition to the Super Six berths, also up for grabs at the preliminary sessions are the all-around championship and individual event finals berths. The all-around winner will be determined after both preliminary team sessions are completed. Event finals berths will be given to the top four individuals from each session in each event (plus ties). The event finals will take place Saturday, Apr. 21 at 7:00 pm.
