The 2003 UCLA gymnastics team made its season debut at the annual "Meet the Bruins" event on Sunday at the John Wooden Center.
Performing before a crowd of 1,000 people, the 10-time Pac-10 champions displayed their skills on the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. Reigning NCAA all-around, vault and floor champion Jamie Dantzscher debuted a world-class skill on the uneven bars, opening her routine with a Shaposhnikova to a Pak salto to an immediate toe-on Shaposhnikova to another Pak salto (Click here to view the video clip). Freshman Kate Richardson performed a full routine on the balance beam, the event on which she won the gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. On floor exercise the Bruins split into two teams and battled in a tumbling contest for stuck landings.
Peppered throughout the performances were several question and answer sessions with coaches and gymnasts, trivia contests and prize giveaways. The event concluded with the Bruin team signing autographs and meeting fans in a post-event social.
UCLA's 2003 season begins on Jan. 2 in Hawaii against Oregon State.
