LOS ANGELES - The second-ranked UCLA softball team improved its record to 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Easton Stadium, downing the San Jose State Spartans by a score of 3-0. Sophomore Keira Goerl improved to 2-0 on the season, walking two and striking out 12, including the side in the second inning.
After a three-up, three-down top of the first, junior Natasha Watley led off the bottom of the first for UCLA with a single to left, stole second, was wild-pitched to third, and scored on a ground-out by Stacey Nuveman.
The Bruins scored their final two runs in the fifth inning, getting a leadoff single by Amanda Freed , followed by an RBI double by Nuveman, who was thrown out at third base on the play. Tairia Mims followed with a double off the left-field fence, and was hit home by Toria Auelua, who also doubled off the wall down the left-field line.
UCLA returns to action on Friday, February 8, at the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Phoenix, AZ.
