Box Score

Los Angeles, CA - The third-ranked UCLA men's soccer team lost for the first time this season, falling to 17th-ranked Loyola Marymount, 2-0, at Loyola's Sullivan Field in front of a crowd of 1,500. Lion junior Yugi Teranishi scored his first career goal to lift LMU to its sixth win of the year.

The first half of the contest saw both teams pressure for the first score. The Bruins outshot the Lions, 5-2, but both goalkeepers, UCLA's Zach Wells and LMU's Adam Sthay each made two saves to keep the game scoreless at the break.

The Lions (6-0-2 overall) controlled the ball for most of the second half, taking eight shots to the Bruins' four. Wells made five saves in the second period and a season-high seven overall, but it was not enough. At 52:05, LMU senior Andres Murriagui stole the ball near UCLA's goal after a bad clearance by a Bruin defender. With Wells out of the goal box, Murriagui passed it to Teranishi, who slotted his first goal of the year and of his career as a Lion.

LMU's defense carefully guarded the Lions' one-goal advantage until late in the game when Michael Coakley was pulled down in the box by Wells on a breakaway, creating a penalty kick attempt for LMU. Junior Michael Erush hit the penalty kick past Wells to push the score to a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Sthay earned his third shutout of the year as he kept the Bruins scoreless through 90 minutes. The win marks LMU's second consecutive regular-season victory over UCLA.

"Today they (LMU) were prepared to play, and we weren't," said UCLA head coach Tom Fitzgerald. "They deserved to win. They came prepared, played with emotion and were better than us today."

UCLA (4-1-0 overall) will try to get back on the winning track on Sunday, Sept. 29 when it hosts San Diego State at Frank W. Marshall Field at 1:00 pm.
