Ojai, Calif. - UCLA men's tennis player Marcin Matkowski will try to become the second Bruin player in as many years to claim the conference singles title Sunday when he faces Washington's Alex Vlaski in the finals of the Pac-10 Championships at Ojai's Libbey Park.
Matkowski, the tournament's top seed, advanced to the final following a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Cal's John Paul Fruttero in Saturday's semifinals. He is looking to follow in the footsteps of teammate Rodrigo Grilli, who claimed the Pac-10 singles title in 2002.
Vlaski, who was beaten by Grilli in last year's final, advanced to the championship match for the second year in a row with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Stanford's David Martin.
In the Pac-10 Invitational draw, UCLA's Alberto Francis advanced to tomorrow's final following a 6-2, 6-4 victory over teammate Chris Surapol. Francis will take on Cal's Wayne Wong, who advanced when teammate Mik Ledvonova was forced to retire in the third set of their semifinal.
The Bruins had two doubles teams in the semifinals of the Pac-10 Invite, however both were beaten Saturday. Lassi Ketola and Aaron Yovan fell to Cal's Or Dekel/Robert Kowalczyk, 8-4. Stanford's Carter Morris/Sam Warburg ousted UCLA's Chris Lam and Surapol, 8-3.
