Malibu, Calif. - The 5 UCLA women's soccer team improved to 1-0-1 on the season Sunday, handing No. 13 Pepperdine a 2-0 setback at Tari Frahm Rokus Field. With the victory, the Bruins snap the Waves' 12-match home winning streak dating back to last season.

The loss also snapped Pepperdine's 34-match regular-season unbeaten streak against non-conference opponents dating back to the 2000 campaign.

The Waves had their season record evened at 1-1-0, while the Bruins improved to 1-0-1.

Defense continued to be the early-season trend for Pepperdine as it held UCLA to just nine shots in the match. The Waves, however, managed just six shots in the contest, and just two in the second half.

The match was scoreless until the 29:43 mark when UCLA freshman midfielder Caitlin Ursini scored following an assist from freshman defender Mary Castelanelli.

The Bruins struck quickly in the second half to take a 2-0 lead on a goal by senior midfielder Sarah-Gayle Swanson, who shot into an empty net.

Swanson took advantage of an aggressive play by sophomore goalkeeper Anna Picarelli, who after saving a shot, came out from in front of the goal in an attempt to retrieve the ball. Picarelli left the goal open and Swanson's shot eluded junior defender Ashley Swanson's attempt to save the ball.

The Bruins, who tied No. 1 Santa Clara 1-1 on Friday, will take their undefeated record into next week's UCLA Women's Cup. UCLA will next face UC Santa Barbara in its home opener at Drake Stadium on Wed. Sept. 3 at 7:00 p.m.
