Ojai, Calif. - UCLA's Daniela Bercek was forced to retire in her quarterfinal singles match Friday, ending the Bruins' participation at the Pac-10 Tennis Championships.
Bercek was down 3-0 in the first set to Stanford's Alice Barnes when she had to retire due to injury. She was the last remaining Bruin singles player, as Laura Gordon lost in the main draw to Stanford's Erin Burdette in the round of 16 late Thursday. Nina Yaftali, the lone Bruin player in the Pac-10 Invitational draw, fell in the round of 16 to Stanford's Anne Yelsey.
Both UCLA doubles teams fell in first-round action Friday. Bercek and Lauren Fisher were defeated by Stanford's Alice Barnes/Erin Burdette, 8-3. Jackie Carleton and Gordon lost to Washington State's Lorena Arias/Chris Martinez, 8-6.
