No. 4-Seeded UCLA Defeats Texas A&M, 4-1 in NCAA Round of 16

Tulsa, Okla. - The fourth-seeded UCLA men's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the 16th year in a row Saturday, posting a 4-1 decision over Texas A&M in the round of 16 at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The Bruins (21-5) will face unseeded Clemson (25-11) in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. (CST). The Tigers were 4-2 winners over TCU in the final match of the evening.
Doubles play was very close, as UCLA managed to record a pair of victories at court Nos. 2 and 3 to claim the one point awarded for doubles play. UCLA's Tobias Clemens and Chris Surapol clinched the match for the Bruins at the No. 3 position with an 8-6 victory over Brett Joelson/Bryan Wooten. Texas A&M won at the No. 1 position.
Down 1-0, the Aggies quickly evened the match when Lester Cook posted a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Clemens at the No. 1 position. That match was a battle of top-15 players, as Cook is ranked No. 13 nationally and Clemens checks in at No. 7.
UCLA would respond however, posting three-consecutive victories to clinch a 4-1 victory. Next to finish was court No. 4, where Bruin junior Alberto Francis knocked off Khaled El Dorry, 6-4, 6-4. Right next door on court No. 3, fellow junior Chris Lam registered another 6-4, 6-4 decision over Mohamed Dakki.
The match was clinched at the No. 6 position, where freshman Philipp Gruendler overcame a difficult first to to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 Wooten.
UCLA's Kris Kwinta and Luben Pampoulov both had their matches suspended. Kwinta was in a third set with Joelson, while Pampoulov had just split with Ante Matijevic.
UCLA and Clemson have already met once this season with the Bruins posting a 7-0 victory over the Tigers at the Los Angeles Tennis Center back on Jan. 27. Joining the Bruins and Tigers in the top half of the draw are top-seeded Illinois and Vanderbilt. The bottom half of the draw features Ohio State, Baylor, Stanford and USC.
With the loss Saturday, Texas A&M ends its season with a 24-9 overall record.
